Some of you might be aware of this but for those who don't know. Vestax (a pro audio company) has just introduced a portable record player like the ones from your youth. It's stereo, has a built in speaker and both headphone and line outputs, plays at 33/45/78, has a pitch control, detachable cover, measures app. 13*11*3 and works on both battery and AC. Just the thing for those out of town record binges.
The list price is $199 but it sells for about $150. I'll be checking one out this weekend.

Does anyone remember the car model that offered a turntable as an option ? I believe it was a 1960's era Chrysler but I could be wrong.

Could you imagine changing records at a stoplight? I can't. What the winter did to these roads leaves even CD players MADE for cars a challange to listen to.

Earlier - the 1956 Chrysler. This is the site (
http://ookworld.com/hiwayhifi.html) you want to look at.
16.67 rpm on a 7" gave you 45 mins of music. Spring loaded tone arm with a stylus "force" of 2gms.
Fun stuff.

Geoff

We at NorthernLightFX can order lots of Vestax product.
I wasn't born yet, but supposedly in-car record players were viewed by some as kind of a cool thing to have in the 60's, at least by some of the "yout" in my area of the country. My father told me that my grandfather bought him one as a gift (I think an RCA) for his '66 Dodge Coronet 500 he bought new back then. Supposedly the record player (a changer) was considered a "good" one, but my father basically considered it a POS - I think he said it ruined a couple of his records and he took it out pretty soon after he got it.

There were several attempts at making record changers for cars. THe first ones were, as mentioned above, special 16.6 rpm players. These obviously required special disks, which were cut with extra fine grooves and required a smaller than normal (for the era) stylus. The recorded response was limited to 7 kHz to prevent severe tracing distortion at the slow speed. THese I think tracked relatively lightly considering. But of course no one wanted to buy the special records (lousy selection), and everyone wanted to play their 45's, so they tried to make that work, but had to use "juke-box" type tracking forces, and basically they ate the records.
THen came the 8-track cartridge. Ugh, what a nightmare.

Here's a neat toy.. I think they made them in Japan. They were little toy cars that traced and played a groove on a record. You would just put the record down on a flat surface, put the car on the record, and it would drive around the record PLAYING it.
I've had a hard time trying to find one of those... Weird, wacky stuff!!

I had one of those!
It was a little gold plastic VW micro-bus that "drove" around on the record and actually played. It was such a gas! Not for valuable records of course, it'll chew it up.
Now I'm kicking myself for losing it. It was last at my parents house several years ago with the original box. I'm sure it got given away or tossed out when the folks moved. D'oh!

That Sony player is really neat! I've seen one or two of those funky models from Sony. Are they expensive and hard to come by now? How about the replacement stylus?
And what's that little bugger on the bottom there? Only plays 45s?
Fun stuff!

Dan,
The Sony turntable is not owned by me; it's owned by a gentleman in Hong Kong. I have e-mailed him about how much he paid for it, but he said the turntable was given to him, so he doesn't know either. I checked the Orion Blue Book for its value, but it's not listed. No listing in ebay either. I have a book from Japan on the 20th anniversary of the Sony Walkman with listing (with photo and price) of almost all models produced, hoping this PS-F5 is in there....no such luck.
As for the little turntable in the large photo, here's a better view....

Ah, I seen how it works now. Thanks!
My family had one or two little portable LP players by Panasonic/National years ago. I still have a few LPs that were chewed up by those things. They were a lot of fun though.

That itty bitty record player looks like the ones they sold for the Pocket Records.... Basically the "floppy" records they used to sell in vending machines...

Does anyone remember a record player in the form of a hamburger? Or the little car that drove around? Jeff

I seem to remember that Audio Technica had a variation on that unit. Teisco Del Ray (aka: Dan Forte) gave one of those away as the grand prize in a weirdest guitar compatition. I think the winner had a Davoli Scarabea. Sorry, babbling.

Ian,
Good memory!! I do remember Audio-Technica has a variation of the Sony PS-F5. I don't know if they were in production at about the same time or what. I will try to locate a photo of one and some info....

Wow, is that a verticle turntable? I've always thought the ultimate turntable design would be a vertical linear tracking machine with two tonearms so you would never have to flip the record. Has such a machine ever been made?
