Scorsese Gets Exclusive Rights For Marley Film
Mar 24, 2008
Story by: Scott Oranburg
A quarter-century since the passing of Bob Marley, the reggae legend's family has maintained a strict policy on licensing his music. Although his songs have been freely licensed to many commercials, TV shows and movies, none of his work has appeared in documentaries or biopics with an actor portraying the icon. But alas, Martin Scorsese was recently granted the exclusive rights to use Marley's music in an upcoming doc to be released in February 2010. Even though Rita Marley, wife of Bob, recently tried to achieve licensing rights for a movie adoption of her biography, No Woman No Cry, it is reported that Scorsese's work will be the only upcoming piece that documents the figure's fascinating life and is scored by his groundbreaking music. The movie will be co-financed by Marley's production company, Tuff Gong Pictures, and Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment.

I guess if anyone could make this work, Scorsese could do it.

That's good news. I bet Scorsese does an excellent job.

I'll really just be happy to see a Scorsese film that's not about the same old stuff.

The same old stuff? Scorsese's output has been pretty diverse.
