View Full Version : Office Staff Says No To Theater's Selection

Something interesting happened today at work. Our management treated us to lunch and a movie at the local mall. There wasn't a single film that anybody out of a group of fifteen wanted to see. Here was the lineup:

10,000 BC
Shutter
Doomsday
Drillbit Taylor (on two screens)
Never Back Down
Tyler Perry's Meet The Brown's

After lunch we all got up to shuffle our way to the theater. I was next to my boss and he asked which film I was going to see. I told him I really didn't want to see anything that's scheduled - none of the movies interested me in the least bit (I brought along earphones and my mp3 player so I wouldn't be bored). He said he was in the same position - so he went around the room and asked my coworkers for their selection and the general consensus was we'd rather go back to the office instead of watching any of the above-mentioned flicks for free.

I haven't been enthused about Hollywood's output for a while, but it says a lot when an entire office staff of various age groups/genders/educational-backgrounds shuns the multiplex.

Sad, isn't it. Holeywood only wants to make films for 14-21 year olds, for the most part. If ya don't like slasher flicks or coming of age, sex comedies, you're usually out of luck.

"Doomsday" is the one out of that list I would love to see. It is rated R and violent and therefore not really suitable for most of the group to see, but I would have watched that one. Writer/Director Neil Marshall was responsible for "Dog Soldiers" and I thought it was terrific, although it sure wasn't for everybody either. I would pass on all of the others, even free.

Although I'm not crazy about this selection, this is also a pretty slow time of year for new releases.

I'm kind of a movie "snob" and yet I still went to the theater at least 20 times last year.

And wow, I'd rather see an absolute bomb (assuming it wasn't something offensive) than go to the office and work!

Your right. The movie business is abominable. How people spend $$ on this junk is beyond me.

I frequently ask my wife would she like to see a movie, then we look at whats playing....nah.

Either that's a mighty fine office with friends who can't wait to work together or... yeah, that's a lousy selection.

But then I'm generally out of sync with current pop culture... can't wait for it to ( finally ) change from what often seems like the '80's, with cell phones and internet added.

I don't know how you've missed all the TV adverts for 10,000 B.C. When they advertise a film this much, it generally means it just won an Academy Award or it really sux. In this case, it would appear to be the latter.

...and it's just KILLIN' me knowing that my local indie arts cinema is cutting its' hours of operation due to lack of butts in seats! We go there every week to see (usually) an unfamiliar movie...and very rarely are disappointed!

edit: I watch about an hour of TV a day and I haven't seen any adverts.

my main reason for not going to the movies any longer are the rude people in the seats...let alone the crappy selections.

My main reason is my HT, now with Blu-ray!

Slim pickens to be sure, but Drillbit Taylor looks fun.

Face it, it's the slowest part of the year for good movies. If the offer had come up in, say, November -- there would have been a very good crop to choose from.

You're a wise viewer. :)

What are they, strawberries?

They don't get out of season, they just run out of reason. ;)

We have an indie theater (http://www.frostburgpalace.org/) here in Frostburg that shows one film a month (sometimes two). This weekend, it's Persepolis. I have plans to see it tonight and can't wait. They only show one film a month and it's the third weekend - I wish they'd show more films, but it's volunteer run and most of the time they barely make enough to book the next month's film.

I've seen many adds for 10,000 BC. Before last night, I hadn't heard of any of the other flicks. Last night, my 11 year old son asked if we could go see Drillbit Taylor this weekend. I pulled up the trailer on the computer and we watched it. It really didn't interest me that much, but I'll probably take him to see it.

February and March are typically when Hollywood releases all the crap they saved up over the year that wouldn't stand a chance during the Summer and Holiday movie seasons. I'm not suprised you couldn't find anything to watch. looking at that list, I might have opted for work, too (but probably would've sat through one of the movies if I was getting paid anyway :righton: ).

I had a similar situation last weekend. My wife had promised to take the kids to a movie, but had a last minute work emergency. When I asked the kids what movie, the choices they gave me were "Step Up To The Streets (uh, no), "College Road Trip" (definitely not),or "Horton Hears A Who" (a grudging ok). I was also planning on bringing my Ipod, but my wife's work problem resolved quickly , and I didn't have to go. They, however, got to pay $7 apiece for the luxury of sitting in the front row.

Between ticket prices, food prices, rude patrons (of which there seem to be a lot more of nowadays then when I was a constant moviegoer in the 70's and 80's), and the overall quality of what comes out of mainstream Hollywood,
I have no problem waiting for the DVD release. The picture may not be as all-encompassing, but with my home theater system the audio is!

That's the reason right there. I haven't been to the movies in weeks for that very reason. Three months ago, the office wouldn't have had a problem at all, just like they won't two months from now.

I would have picked Drillbit Taylor because my best friend was the art director, but the reviews are not good.

Me too! :goodie: I'll never quit attending the cinema on occasion but home cinema has morphed my behaviour hugely.

I agree. This selection isn't a "state of Hollywood": it's the time in-between the good releases. Coming soon: Leatherheads!

My office had a "day at the movies" about 10 yrs ago.
We saw "The Avengers"......god was it awful
I barely knew anyone at the office.
It felt like HS....trying to sit next to someone who was sort of a friend.
