Will Smith They could have have done so much more with the story, but, as with most Smith movies, they always have to have him battling stupid aliens or something.

Doesn't the new dvd release have a different ending or something? Maybe that will make the movie better?

2 hours of static white interference would improve the movie enormously.

;)

Sorry for the thread crap.

Doesn't the new dvd release have a different ending or something? Maybe that will make the movie better? The alternate ending is clearly the one that the filmmakers were planning on since it is foreshadowed by events earlier in the film that do not really pay off or make much sense in the theatrically released version. It is still problematic and does not quite live up to the promise of the film's first two-thirds which I thought were excellent. Will Smith gives perhaps his best performance ever in a film.

Hey hey - Ken and I agree on something! Well, except it sounds as though he likes the alternate ending, whereas I didn't - I thought it was lame. But I like the movie overall and thought Smith was great.

The two-disc set is worthwhile ONLY if you want to see the alternate ending. It has no extras otherwise - just the different cut of the film, which only changes the ending:

That, or maybe just buy The Omega Man, both options are better than buying/watching I Am Legend.

I'm curious what the alternate ending is, but no way would I buy this. It falls apart in the second half, and the zombies are so ridiculously CG I couldn't suspend disbelief no matter how hard I tried. Maybe someday someone will actually film the book, which has a very bleak ending.

I watched the Blu-Ray last night. My feelings on the film are somewhat similar to many reviews I've read, which is that the final "act" of the film is a few notches below the rest.

I haven't read the book, but for whatever reason based on reviews of the film, I had been given the impression that the film was quite different from "The Omega Man." I was suprised at how similar the new film is to "The Omega Man." There are plenty of differences certainly, but they were quite similar.

I didn't find Smith's performance to be mind-blowing. There are a few moments where he has to stretch and does quite a good job.

Most interestingly, I didn't find this to be markedly better than "The Omega Man." The main problem with "The Omega Man" is the 70's camp and dialogue. "I Am Legend" fares much better there, but has its own problems, such as blatant product placement, especially in the early part of the film, and the poor CGI that actually makes the campy makeup job on "Omega" fare better; at least those people look like they are real, because they are.

As for the two endings of "I Am Legend", I wasn't a big fan of either. The original theatrical ending seems less contrived and less happy, but it seems abrupt. The "alternate" ending seems to have had more thought and development put into it, but it too seems rather abrupt.

The whole thing is drawn out in campy style in the old "Omega" film, but at least there is more development there. Even though the ending of "Omega" is far from perfect, the whole thing is developed more and makes some sense. There seems to be more interaction and a bit more of a back story given to the, whatever the monster/vampire/boogieman/mutant things are.

The Blu-Ray did look fantastic, though. Strangely, on some of the bonus documentary features, they show scenes being filmed that aren't seen in the either cut of the actual film, and they didn't give us any deleted scenes. I was actually a bit annoyed by the "alternate" cut on the Blu-Ray being presented only as a whole. That is, you can't just single out the different material, you have to find it within the film. There is at least one scene besides the ending that is different, so I wonder if any other little bits might be different. They apparently did this via seamless branching on the Blu-Ray, but it seems like a bit of a rip to have the standard 2-disc DVD set simply offer this slightly alternate cut on the second disc rather than offering the few alternate scenes on their own and saving having to do a second disc.
