Well if they ain't selling them, Sony ain't gonna make 'em I guess.

It is about the cash after all. More people are wanting flat panels than CRTs.

I bought a used Sony KD-34XBR960 last year becuase they had stopped making them new.

I think that right now CRT is still superior to LCD, Plasma, DLP, OLED, or any other technology I have witnessed with my own eyes.

Too bad they got rid of these before they improved upon them.

I'm a CRT fan myself, although I have a rear projection 3 gun set.

You might be surprised, some of the new plasmas can actuallly beat CRT tubes for look and performance. Since the newest plasmas can offer true 1080p performance with 1x1 pixel mapping, they beat even the best CRTs in terms of absolute resolution. Color gamut and black level can exceed CRT standards on the nicest sets, i.e. Pioneer Kuros.

I would tend to agree with you, but there are 2% of plasmas out there that can match/beat even the best CRTs.

Yesterday we believed our bedroom's 19 years old KV-32SXR10 was malfunctioning but it seems it was an issue with the channel.

But it made me consider what to do if we don't have it anymore.

Local air and cable channels are all SD 3:4 but locally available CRTs are quite cheapo and have bad PQ, especially if you are used to a SXR.

Silver lining is that I'd probably bring the 42" Plasma into the bedroom, watch local and cable TV pillarboxed and get a 50+ Plasma or a proyector for the living room.

Now, while I love my Sony CRT, my Panny plasma looks much better with quality sources.

Production peak in 2000 to production ceasing 2008...quite a ride

40 years is more than a ride ... that's an institution.

I had a 27 inch XBR I bought in 1991 or so and it finally died on me in 2006. It was a terrific set and we had a heckuva run. I think CRT in many ways is better quality video but the heavy weight and lack of sexiness seem to have killed it off.

I think OLED is the next big thing.

OLED can do reds better and has a great viewing angle, but really, it is incremental vs. what's out there now. Plus, the lifetime and aging of the color differently is a problem.

LCDs and Plasmas will get to the point this year and next where the picture will be better than most CRTs. Keep in mind, comparing a Sony XBR Trinitron or Panasonic Tau HD CRT to an average LCD or Plasma isn't fair.

Top to top, they should be better within 1 year or two.

Doesn't the broadcast industry still use CRTs to make sure what they're sending out looks correct? Recently on an HT forum, someone said they regularly use a 40" Sony HD CRT monitor that cost around $20K for this purpose (they were actually discussing compression used for the consumer HD formats & this monitor was used to view uncompressed HD video which he said looked incredibly realistic).

I love CRT's. I have so many formats, CRT functions well with all of 'em. I'm not in any hurry to replace my CRT's. I have an annie-log 32" Sony XBR250 that I got back in '98 that is so excellent for LD's. I'll never part with it till it's dead, dead, dead! I put it in my stereo system to watch my music LD's and DVD's on.

I have a virtually new 34" Sony XBR that I bought on close-out for $600 two years ago. It sat, boxed, in my garage till I needed it a few months ago.

By the time I wear these two sets out, maybe I can get holigraphy or somethin' like that to displace 'em!

True. Our facility recently upgraded and moved a CRT out of one room into the newer one. We replaced it with an LCD that every editor hates. When our colorists auditioned a high-end LCD, they all but laughed it out the building.

There's a bit of panic going on in video post-production, because Sony warned us a couple of years ago that CRT production was going to end soon. The standard monitor we use for video mastering is the Sony Broadcast BVM-32E1, which costs $42,000. There's nothing even remotely as good as this monitor, so finding something else that will tell us the truth about HD pictures is going to be hard. (You can read the specs on this Sony CRT monitor here (http://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/DisplaySubCategory?m=0&p=8&sp=20073) on the Sony Broadcast website.)

OLED has a lot of potential, and I was impressed by a demo I saw at a Sony store a few months back. But if a 15" set is $2000, I'd hate to guess what a 32" set costs.

"But my SL-HF750 looks so good on my PVM2530!", he said, as they tried to drag him into the current century.......

I read that they've been demo-ing a 27" one. I presume that's their biggest one for now...???

Can't speak for the mfgs, but probably. There are advancements being worked on that will provide picture that can't be done on CRT like chrome, and brighter colors.

It is true that broadcast tuned monitors (many $$$) are best, and are usually CRTs, but for consumer use, the difference is going away.

I just got my first plasma and I worried that I'd like the image less on it than on my old WEGA. Sure, the new set would be bigger - I went from a 36" 4X3 set to a 50" 16X9 screen - but would it be BETTER?

Yeah, I think it is - or at least as good. Once I set up the screen right, it's looked great. I'm glad I made the switch...
