I bought a Sony SCD-CE775 as an open floor unit last November, and lately the CD tray has been sticking when I open and close it. When I press the close button, the carousel stops about a quarter inch too soon and just gets stuck. I can just nudge the carousel with my finger and it plays, but it has me concerned.
Has anybody else had this problem with their SCD-CE775? Or have you had this problem with another 5-CD carousel player and easily fixed it?
I didn't buy the warranty :sigh:, and I sure don't want to spend $400 to have it modded if it won't open or close.

Haven't heard of this problem but it shouldn't cost to much to fix at your local SONY repair place if it gets worse.
Mine seems fine..... so far.... :sigh:
Should be an easy repair, I'd think.

I wish I had been thinking ahead and bought one of these. Now they're no longer available. The 220es is $500! Any suggestions for a SACD player for $300 or less?

The problem with a sticking try is most likely a problem with the alignment on the drawer. The tray is coming back, and the mechanics of the gear placement isn't perfect.
In many cases, I betcha it's real, real simple and doesn't require it to even be re-greased. I catch this happening on the pickup mechanism too.... The lazer pickup can't read the TOC on the disc, and hangs. Just by removing the pickup assembly and putting it back nicely works things out.
I had a real annoying time with a 12CD changer in my car. The ribbon cable got loose, and the left channel sounded horrible. All I had to do is open the changer after removing it from the car, and un/re-attach the output cables to the connectors. Problem solved!
If you're mechanically inclined, I can BET it's a simple thing.

I accidentally knocked the reflective plate off of mine once. Luckily I didn't break it! But no problems with a sticky tray though. Fingers crossed.

I had a problem the other night where it could not read the last two tracks of a redbook CD. The unit kept spinning the motor even after I removed the disc.
Thinking that the best course of action was to throw in a SACD, I did so and the problem resolved itself! This unit definitely has it preferences in order.

The Sony SCD-CE775s appear on eBay every now and then, and I'm sure you could get one for less than $300.
Here's one on eBay (
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14975&item=3018713898&rd=1) right now, and the price is currently at $200.
Insert standard "I don't know the guy," and "I don't have anything to do with this sale," disclaimers here.

After looking at online retailers for two days and only coming up with, "not available," or "discontinued," I found the SCD CE775 at my local t.v. and appliance center here in Lincoln, Nebr. I couldn't believe it!
I inquired about the player, and it turned out they had only two left -- a new one and the display model. Price is $198.
Should I spring for a Sony or wait for another company to build something better? Personally, I never thought of Sony as high quality -- just a company that produces low-end, mass-distributed audio components. What do you folks think I should do?

Most likely the timing belt is worn out. Next it will start putting the disc back into the tray out of the indent. Then it will start jamming on opening the tray.
Get the service manual, it will have the part number of the belt,
(here's one place that has them for download, cheap. If it's not listed, just send him an e-mail)
http://www.celica-dude.d2g.com/
Then order the part from Sony DAPC,
http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/
then follow the diagram in the service manual and replace the belt.
Cost? Service manual $10-30. Belt $10+$7 shipping... satisfaction of fixing it youself?
Priceless.

For the money , you will never find an sacd player as musical as the sony scd-ce775. Some people may say it is not an "audiophile" player, I think it sounds wonderful on cd and sacd. Any other player will cost you AT LEAST twice as much.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago at one of my local hi-fi stores. It was a display model but had never been played. It has gotten better sounding the more I use it. I payed $165 plus tax and I am very happy with it. If you want sacd on the cheap it is the way to go. The cd playback sounds better then both my dvd-a player and my philips cd player. As always just my $0.02.

I've noticed that many forum members own this player. I have an opportunity to purchase a new-in-box machine for $170; maybe even lower. Are you happy with it?

Very happy. It is a great sounding player for both redbook and SACD.

I think on the "bang-for-the-buck" scale, this thing goes through the roof. I like mine a lot.

I bought the last in-the-box SCD CE775 machine from one of my local electronics stores yesterday for $170. Can't wait to hook it up and hear the difference! It's been 10 years since I've upgraded my CD player.

You're in for quite a surprise. But remember, give it time to break in and settle down. I put 100 hours on mine before I devoted serious listening time to it, and I think it made quite a difference.
YMMV, of course, but I do believe the sound of my player has become more analog-like since I first got it.
I just sent mine to SACDMods.com (
http://www. SACDMods.com/) for the full upgrade, and I cannot wait to get it back. And I'm gonna celebrate with the new Beck and DSOTM SACDs.

I LOVE my CE775, redbook and SACD. One sweet player, and I bought a demo from CC for about 130.00. Woohoo! Best 130.00 I ever spent on audio gear.
Tonight's treat: the copy of Steve's SACD master of Bayou Country I just bought.

I concur, the player does Redbook very well. Maybe too well. I actually preferred the Redbook remaster of Peter Gabriel's Shaking The Tree/GH's to the single layer SACD that just came out.
SACD's do sound wonderful in it though...especially James Taylor's Hourglass.

I finally got around to hooking up my brand new CE775 today, pulled out The Beatles, "Help," to christen the thing, and it wouldn't play the disc. It just kept spinning and spinning, so I took out the disc and their were circular scratches and a couple red paint dots on the CD -- I couldn't believe it!
Back to the store it goes tomorrow. It was the last CE775 they had, so owning one might not be in the cards after all.

Did you try playing a different disc first? Red paint on the disc seems odd - maybe the disc had problems BEFORE you put it in the player.
Just trying to help you avoid returning the last player in the store if there isn't really anything wrong with it.

I'm thinking maybe some punk kid threw a forign object in it.... I'd carefully take it apart, as long as you don't tear off any warranty stickers to see what's up... It's a very simple unit.

I finally got my player back. The malfunction stemmed from misaligned parts inside the machine. It's hooked up and sounds great!
I haven't had a CD player for two weeks and was going through withdrawal. First thing I played was, "Help," and "Dark Side of the Moon."
