anyone know any documentary films that talk about either hi fi, audiophiles or record collecting? I remember once walking in a shop and seeing a doc about Les Paul they talked about the evolution of the turntable, unfortunetely, I don't know the title of the film... Anyways, any suggestions?

Desperate Man Blues, about legendary 78 collector, Joe Bussard.
Fascinating film (all 51 minutes of it.) This is one of those that I hope gets re-released on DVD with a couple of extra hours of bonus footage.

The Crumb documentary deals in part with Robert Crumb's obsession with vinyl collecting.

The German members may know the comedy Die Hunde sind schuld (It's all the dogs' fault).
In one scene, there's a vinyl collector who finally found the extremely rare 7 inch single he had been looking for for ages, and while he's full of proud carrying his new purchase home, a giant dog, no a DOG, a D O G jumps at him and he drops the single which is being smashed to pieces. And the dog's owner comments: "Don't be afraid, my friend, He only wants to play!" :realmad:
Since I watched that film, I always carry a .45 when looking for CDs :D

DinerThe Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs (on which The Deaprted was based) opens with a scene where the two antagonists discuss speakers and cables, and has a scene where one character's Macintosh amp is prominently displayed.

Yep, a good one. Steve Buscemi + record collecting in all its geeky glory.

If the error message persists on that site, you could always buy it from Amazon (
http://www.amazon.com/Desperate-Man-Blues-Discovering-American/dp/B000JMK6IU/) ($22.99 new, or $14.00 used).

Vinyl (
http://imdb.com/title/tt0120454/), by Alan Zweig.
Not as much about record collecting as it is about obssessive compulsive behaviour. It's amazing how so many of the subjects in the film don't really know all that much about music (at least they don't appear to)
More sad overall than actually entertaining.

Not so much sad as horrifying; how about that episode of 'The Shield' where Vic Mackey smashes into a million pieces some drug dealer's collection of original Blue Note LPs.

Nicholas Cage's character in "The Rock" is a Beatle-maniac that gets a highly prized vinyl in the beginning.

The entire film was posted on the internet but has since been removed. I think a new DVD is unavailable at the moment. Try ebay.
