I was just about to pull the trigger on the D200 and then the D300 comes along for about 50%, street price.

So they are different and I have some questions maybe someone here can answer.

The sensor CCD on the D200 CMOS on the D300, I have read a little and it's confusing which may be better. 10mp vs 13mp, iso 100-1600 on one 200-3200 on the other.

I still am leaning towards the D200.
Apparently my AI lenses will work on both, In the Aperature Priority mode?

:help:

Is this your first Digital SLR?
AI lenses will work in AP mode on both.
I only use newer lenses so I've never tried them.
Really not much to fault in the D200, other than it's old now.
The D300 CMOS sensor will be slightly better, but you'll have to look at the details.
If cost isn't an issue, go with the D300.
Newer.
Better AF system.
Bigger, better LCD screen.
Better sensor with I believe some self cleaning capabilities.
I'm cheap, still using my D70 that I have no real reason to replace,
since it still makes good photos.
So I would get the D200 for cost alone and put the extra money in
new lenses, software, photo paper and ink, etc.
But that's me.
If you get the D200, you'll be happy with it.

Just found this, might help.

Thanks for your input. When I found the D300 for the price I did, about $200.00 more than the D200, I bought it.
Will be asking more questions on all these lenses, DX, ED, AF...
I have had a few point and shoots, really bugs me about the delay when the shutter release is depressed and when the picture is taken.
My Nikon FM2 has been my primary camera but I thought this may be a good time to take the plunge. The bonus of being able to use my lenses, much in the way I do now on my FM2.
What would be a nice all around lens for the D300 that will take full advantage of it's systems?

Nikon 18-200vr DX.
Great all around lens.
DX for digital only.
Nikon 12-24 DX if you are a wide angle fan.
Only two general purpose zoom lenses most would need.
Both quality, though somewhat expensive.

I had the D200 (2 years) and sold the cam yesterday.... the D300 is not only an update from the D200, but a major upgrade (IMO).

The D300 is better in every aspect. But do NOT use cheap glasses on the D300!!! The D300 brings the best result with primes or the best zooms like 17-55 or 70-200.

By the way... the D300 is a 12 MP DSLR.

By all reports, even better than the D2X.
