The Steve Martin shows were stellar. This might've been the best season they ever had. Man, just thinking about Paul Schaffer as "Don Kirshner" introducing the Blues Brothers has me chuckling -- such a great bit.

I was lukewarm to Steve Martin at the time--didn't dislike him but neither did I think he was hilarious. (Although I always did love the 'What the hell is that thing' sketch.) But watching the season 1 and 2 sets, the first time I've really watched the show in chronological order from the beginning, it was his first show where I felt the show really started to gel into something greater than the sum of its parts.
And I also found him extremely funny. Maybe I was just too young at the time.

The Chevy -Billy Joel show is one of the best shows on SNL I've ever seen. Especially knowing the backstage drama.
Many people consider this season the best in the history of the show.
I think the 2nd Steve Martin Show w/ the Blues brothers is also great all the way through/

I had forgotten how Jimmy Buffett was kind of a 'who???' to a lot of people in those days and hence, not really worthy of getting all the music spots in the eyes of the network.

I have never heard this story. What was going on backstage?

Chase was acting like a jerk and he got into a shoving match with John Belushi moments before air. I can't recall exactly what caused the blow up, but there was a lot of back biting that day on all sides.
I've heard about Chase looking shaken up and out of sorts on the air but I've never seen the show.
It's all detailed in Tom Shales' awesome book on SNL.

Interesting observation. I think you're right.
And here's a Fun Fact to impress your friends with: In the "Hollywood Squares" parody, Steve Martin's character introduces one of the anonymous contestants as "Woody Allen's Sister."
Who is she really?
...........Jeopardy Music plays...............
Woody Allen's sister.
Letty Aronson, Assistant to SNL Talent Coordinator Jean Doumanian.

If you re-read the aforementioned book, the brouhaha was actually between Chase and Bill Murray.

The acutal story is that the whole cast resented Chevy for leaving and hadn't spoken to him in a long time. Bill kind of felt threatened since he had taken Chevy's place.
Right before they went on the air, Chevy and Bill got into a fist fit....but Belushi got in between both of them and absorbed most of the punches between the two.
Ironically, it was Belushi who, playing the role of Iago, had been egging both of them on throughout the week.
Chevy certainly looks shaken on the air.
They appolgized later on and during the 4th or 5th season, Chevy appologized on air to Bill on one of the ones Chevy hosted.
Chevy had known Bill since The National Lampoon Radio hour....and of course they have done Caddyshack together and even did a little bit together the last time Bill Murray hosted, so I think the anomonicity between the two has been burried.

Great news! I just finished Season Two a few weeks ago and I can see how the show is improving with each season so I'll be looking forward to Season Three! Especially the Chevy Chase episode.

as well as the infamous Elvis Costello appearance.
I watched the original broadcast when Elvis Costello was on the show.
I was vaguely aware of Costello prior to the show - but definetly more
aware of him afterwards.
I specifically remember when the band was finished playing - they
dropped their instruments - and walked off the stage to dead
silence... maybe even some amplifier feedback.
I remember thinking "that's odd... what are they so ANGRY about?"
I have seen the incident many times since then - and it's never
appeared to be consistent with my memory of the live broadcast.
Specifically - I think Michaels added in some fake audience applause
and faded the video quite quickly as the band finishes.
That's much less confrontational... and I think it pretty much
erases what actually happened.
I'm real curious if the DVD will have the sanitized ending...

I was so psyched when I read the news on Saturday Night about the 3rd Season release!
Can't wait. Hands down the best season of the first 5 Seasons!!
You'll get "Coneheads Family Feud", the classic Steve Martin episode with King Tut, Blues Brothers and Festrunk Brothers, Hey You, Dancing In The Dark, Uncle Roy, The Nerds, E Buzz Miller, Nick The Lounge Singer, Olympia Restarant (ie. "Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger"), the infamous return of Chevy Chase (as host)....and more!
Oh yeah, the cast singing "What'd I Say" with Ray Charles is priceless!!
Yes, the best season yet!

What was the big controversy over this about ? The fact that he played a different song then planned ?....it wasnt the content about Radio ? was it ?

Wow...they're certainly coming faster now, aren't they? A year between Season 1 and 2, now six months between 2 and 3.
Hope that bodes well for complete-ness and quality.

EC and co were p'o'd over the air of superiority of the cast, and Michaels in particular. They felt they were being treated as second class citizens. They knew Michaels had the show timed down to the second, so when he stopped the song and played Radio radio it blew the precise timing of the show to hell. (EC had seen Jimi Hendrix do it years before on UK TV, when he stopped Hey Joe to do Sunshine of Your Love). At the time, the story was Michaels was standing right at one of the cameras, scowling and giving the band the finger in full view, as they played.

Forgot that Uncle Roy wasn't until the fourth season....
It will come out hopefully.
Anyways, nothing wrong with Season 3 though. Awesome still!
Yes, I do agree with another poster here. Hopefully the "speediness" between sets doesn't comprimise the content at all (ex. musical performances, material being edited, bad picture quality -- or overall quality control issues).

Did I mention the great musical guests on here as well?
Billy Joel
Jackson Browne
Jimmy Buffett
Stephen Bishop (there's a blast from the past)
the aforementioned Elvis Costello
Eddie Money
and of course The Blues Brothers.
BTW, the famous "Soul Man" performance doesn't appear until Season 4 as well in the opening of the show hosted by Carrie Fisher.

If he does, IIRC it goes to the victim's family.
