Hi all,

I have long been obsessed by various "classic" monitor designs and was wondering about the sound quality of the following speakers in a home (near/mid field) enviroment.

JBL 4312
Tannoy Little Gold Monitors
Tannoy DMT12
Harbeth Monitor 30
Genelec 1037B
ATC SCM 50

My listening preference encompases everything save for classical and metal (vintage rock / pop, percussion driven jazz, african, avant garde, hip hop, electronica, modern pop/rock, soul, r&b – both modern and vintage, blues, reggae, dub, big band, alt country, funk, power pop, folk, post rock, krautrock, space jazz, techno, hard bop, swing, dixieland - the works!)

Rightly or wrongly, I value the rhythmic intergrity and musical involvement over most things, esp. when the bulk of my music has little fidelity to speak of. Save for the rather overpriced top gear of Linn/Naim, I have yet to have an "audiophile" brand to get me involved to the music (Including Jeff Rowland/Watt/Puppy/Entec, Burmester systems, Classe/Avalon, Krell/Totem etc). I also value bass linearity over weight most of the time (So, no Cerwin Vega or JMLab for me ;P )

I could care less about pin-point imaging 90% of the time.

I am not looking to the fastest sounding but one that can accurately portray the "speed" and weight of the performance -- from Fats Domino to Tony Williams to Keith Moon to Carl Craig's 150bpm techno.

Also, my ideal speaker should reveal the details and defects of the recording but not spotlight them and let that intrude the listening experience. I do extended listening weekly (i.e over 8 to 15 hours over the weekend) so a "searing treble" in not ideal. And finally the should be able to withstand a weekly funk/reggae block party that I DJ without me having to buy PA equipment ;)

Thanks in advance!

Roy

Hi Roy,

Welcome.

I like the Tannoy Little Gold Monitors. Also the DMT 12's as well. A nice smooth "Tannoy-like" sound. Easy on the ears for long periods of time. Good for mid or even nearfield listening and not too much money.

Just my opinion of course!
