View Full Version : How do I get to the "phonogram" board?
I have heard about this vinyl board. Can someone give me the link so I can add that forum to my list. Thanks.

Phonogram is an email-based discussion list, the subscription info is as follows:
======================================== =============
Overview:
--------
Phonogram is a discussion group for those who listen to, collect, or
otherwise enjoy music on records. The group is an open, informative,
interesting, and just plain fun place for people to share their enthusiasm
for, knowledge of, and opinions on music on shiny black discs. Although
the focus is primarily on 33 1/3 RPM vinyl LPs, comments and questions on
45s, 78s, reel to reel tapes, or other media (even CeeDees) are welcome.
Discussion of hardware supporting record playback (e.g., turntables,
tonearms, cartridges, phono stages, and accessories) is fair game as well.
Whatever material related to the enjoyment of records that catches the
members' interest is welcome grist for the discussion mill.
Subscriptions:
-------------
Phonogram is administered as a Majordomo mailing list. In order to
participate (read and/or contribute) you need to enter a subcription with
the list server. But first you will need to select the form you prefer for
receiving list messages:
- a subscription to the list itself (Phonogram) will result in individual
messages being delivered to you as email immediately after they are
sent to the list by other members
- a subscription to the digest (Phonogram Digest) will result in an
entire day's traffic being sent to you as a single large email message
once each day (around 6:00 AM eastern US time)
To subscribe to Phonogram, send email to <majordomo@graphics.cornell.edu>
with the command "subscribe phonogram" in the body of the message. To
subscribe to Phonogram Digest, send email to the same address with the
command "subscribe phonogram-digest". If you want to subscribe an address
other than the account the email is coming from, append that address to the
subscription request (e.g., "subscribe phonogram my-other-address").
To prevent people from subscribing others to the list against their wishes,
the server will send a confirmation request to the address to be
subscribed. If you follow the instructions in that message, essentially
returning an acknowledgment message to the server, your subscription will
be activated.
Participation:
-------------
You contribute to the list's discussions simply by sending an email message
to the appropriate address. Either <phonogram@graphics.cornell.edu> or
<phonogram-digest@graphics.cornell.edu> will work equally well. As list
and digest subscribers alike receive the exact same material, the addresses
are effectively synonymous.
To protect subscribers from receiving unsolicited email (spam) via the
list, the server will only accept messages sent from subscribed addresses.
If you use multiple email accounts, make sure you send your conributions
from the account receiving Phonogram traffic.
Administrative requests (questions, problem reports, and the like, as
opposed to normal discussion traffic) should be sent as email to
<owner-phonogram@graphics.cornell.edu>.

Sam,
Before you just barge on there, why don't you email the list owner Richard Foster and say howdy? His email address is:
Richard S. Foster [rsfoster@netcom.ca]
He will "announce" you to the list. Be sure to tell him you heard about Phonogram from the DCC Forum...
Thank you Steve. I will email him and say hello. This sounds like a select group of vinyl fans. Is there some criteria by which members are chosen?

All different types of vinyl lovers on there. A lot of "industry" types, writers, etc.

"All different types of vinyl lovers on there"
Only one type - insane. Present company very much included.

One request, please, if anyone decides to join up and check it out - phonogram is very much a VINYL list. While reissues, remasters, etc., are always hot topics, it is in the context of VINYL - digital discussion is tolerated - but only just barely - and it is NOT the main purpose of phonogram by any means. Just a pre-reminder.

I never got on with Mr. Foster. Many people might feel the same; and yes leave your sanity at the door. I think Stan Ricker (a vinyl god of thunder) looks in there and participates, but it's been over a year since I've even stepped foot.
Lots of drive-by-wailings, but it was fun. I woulnd't have gotten on this board if it wasn't for the fact I didn't like getting harassing emails from RF.
If Mr. Foster thinks you might be clouding his winshield of a discussion-board, he'll let ya have it. That's all I'll say.

I'm with Scott on this one -- too many wealthy (or in debt) middle-aged snobs bragging about their Clearaudio whatever cartridge and flaming each other about a "lack of pace" on such and such concerto. Do you want to spend $400 on a ditigal tracking force gauge? I don't. Spend that money on software, sit down, shut up, enjoy.
BTW, IME, the discussion is heavily slanted towards classical and new people will generally be ignored, since you won't be part of the inner sanctum.
