View Full Version : Movie sequels that have nothing to do with the previous movie(s).

I hate when a movie sequel coems out that ignores the previous movie in the series. The "Friday The 13th" series is notorious for this (Part 8 and Jason Goes To Hell).
Anyone have any favorite examples?

Or about sequels that SHOULD have had nothing to do with the originals...any sequel to "Silence of the Lambs" for example--all three of which were bad/unnecessary (except "Manhunter" although admittedly "Red Dragon" the remake wasn't bad...just unnecessary).

The "sequel" to "A Fish Called Wanda."
It's getting popular for studios to slap [blank] 2 to piggyback a DVD on the reputation ("recognizable title" would probably be more accurate) of a previous film though often the film was never intended as a sequel (or sometimes not even made with any connection intended)

The "sequel" to "A Fish Called Wanda."
That's the first one that popped into my mind too. I still remember sitting through it, thinking "Why didn't they just quit while they were ahead?" A Fish Called Wanda is one of my favorite movies, so Fierce Creatures was more than a little difficult to watch.

"Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn" contains no references to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
"A Shot in The Dark" wasn't really a sequel to "The Pink Panther". Clouseau was actually a supporting character in the first film, but he stole the show and "Shot" pretty much stands alone.

Ah, but remember the tagline for that movie:
"This Is Not A Sequel. There Has Never Been Anything Like It!"

And is all the better for it. :)
Pity it wasn't a success, prodding the Myers of the original 'Halloween' to disappear into sequel (and remake) oblivion...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who really likes Halloween III. Creative movie... Doesn't make much sense, but fun nonetheless.

But how can a sequel like "Fierce Creatures" or "ST II: Wrath of Khan" be said to have NOTHING to do with the previous flick(s) when they featured the same characters?

Not sure about this one, but didn't the "Blair Witch" sequel just use the name and have little connection to the first flick?

It doesn't!

Buh? Are you saying "Creatures" brought back the same actors but cast them as new characters? (Obviously I never saw it...)

(Obviously I never saw it...)Yes, just like the Christopher Guest films "Waiting For Guffman", "Best In Show", "A Mighty Wind" and "For Your Consideration" all featured the same cast but different characters.

I haven't seen them, but aren't the "Bring It On" cheerleading movies actually stand-alones?

Wow - I never knew that! (Obviously.) I always thought the characters continued in "Fierce Creatures"...

I agree. John Carpenters original idea when he made Halloween III was to drop the Michael Myers story and have a different Halloween story for each sequel. It's too bad it did not work out and he went back to the Michael Myers story.

I think of the Guest films as emplying an amorphous ensemble where somone that played a leading role in one film may appear in a small supporting role in another. In some ways there are similarities with the ensembles that have moved through Woody Allen or Robert Altman films.
I haven't had the feeling that Guests films have been getting better, generally. "For Your Consideration" was so similar to "Waiting For Guffman" that I can hardly believe he actually went ahead and told the same story a second time.
I did like "A Mighty Wind" a lot.
Originally I was pleased that he got away from the mockumentary format but now I'm not so sure. I think it's time for Guest to just make a film (with or without the same ensemble) that isn't a specific sendup of any subculture. I think he's pumped that well dry. Even if he makes another great one, he's just competing with himself.
Eventually Woody Allen had to get serious about being a filmmaker and stop making pictures that just sustained a certain franchise. I think Guest needs to do that now.
All that said, I think the quality of the character and dialogue of the portrayals in the Guest films, when seen as improv comedy have never slipped and have remained on the nose. For that reason, they're all watchable.

Carpenter didn't have anything to do with the creative side to "Halloween 3" except as a credited producer (don't know if he had any hands on activity there either). He did, however, co-producer and co-write 2".

I think, over the years, a small audience has developed for the film that, although recognizing its flaws, enjoys it anyway. It's a real shame that the budget DVD release is all we'll ever see of the film, but it's a solid release of its type and has at least been made available on the format.
Fangoria once held that the soundtrack was the best of all the 'Halloween' films, and it certainly is great.

House II had nothing to do with House, other than it was a story of a strange, more amusing than scary, house. In fact, I'm having trouble remembering the plot of House I. As an oddity, one featured "Cliff" and the other "Norm" (don't know the actors' names) from Cheers.
