Another way to make Garfield funny.
Rewind back to 1978, stop in 1982. The year Jim Davis officially ran out of good ideas for the strip.:D

We had a thread about this before, but I can't find it.
Another way to make Garfield funny (or surreal) is to choose random frames and put them together. Here's a Garfield randomizer:

Here are the favourites that came up for me:

From what I hear, Jim Davis hasn't actually written or drawn the strip in years, anyway.

If it makes "Garfield" funny, maybe it would work on "Cathy"....?

That next to last cartoon doesn't look at all like Garfield...at least, not the one I know,anyway...is that a early cartoon,or is it a "New" Garfield? Michael Boyce
It's Garfield's original design. Must be a late '70s or early '80s strip.

It's Garfield's original design. Must be a late '70s or early '80s strip.July 18, 1978 to be precise - here's the actual strip.
The second one below is the first Garfield strip, from June 19, 1978. Half a year later he had changed a LOT, as can be seen in this December 19, 1978 strip.
You can see how Garfield evolved here:

I read the strips from the Garfield "randomizer" with the same expression of glassy-eyed incomprehension I have when reading the regular strips.

If it makes "Garfield" funny, maybe it would work on "Cathy"....?Cathy dosen't need to be made funny, I find it useful as it is - it gives some great insights into the female condition!
