This is really a post in praise of Best Buy's service plan. Back in november while visiting my family in Fla. I bought a DVPNC650V, a floor-model that had been pretty heavily used. The salesperson let me have it for $49 and suggested that I get the 4 year service plan as insurance against any defects or damage. For $100 bucks and that kind of assurance, I couldn't pass it up, and I've been very happy with it. My only frustration (besides the push-button problems that others have complained about) is the fact that the guy couldn't find me the right remote. I've been unable to switch between the SACD and CD functions to hear the differences between redbook and Hi Rez on my hybrid disks. I've also been unable to skip disks without going through the video screen menu on the TV. And there are a few other things.

Well, the original sales guy told me to keep checking with my local BB to see if they could find a stray remote for the unit, one that would either be the right one or at least closer than the one he gave me. I tried once back in January, and they were very nice about looking around, but couldn't find anything. I went back again last week, however, and got a very pleasant surprise. Once the guy checked and found that they didn't have any matching players in the store he said, "you know you bought the service plan, why don't you call them and ask them to send you a replacement?" I had no idea I could do that! No one said anything to me at the start, but, sure enough, a quick, very pleasant conversation with a customer service rep. on the phone and three days later I get a brand-new remote, no questions asked, and it's an exact match!

That more than payed me back for the whole service plan. The original salesperson said that a new remote would cost me at least $60, but the CS rep. on the phone said that if the remote they gave me didn't do what a remote is supposed to do on the machine, they consider that a malfunction worthy of replacement.

A very enlightened policy, if you ask me!

So now I can say without a doubt how much better the SACD layers of my hybrids sound without having to play them on different machines. And they sound much better indeed.

I'm not usually one to like dealing with big companies like BB, but I have to say that this was, despite the delay, a very satisfying interaction.
