There are several releases of this movie.
Which one is the best?
Thanks in advance.

I think the 2-disc set(s) [Dread Pirate or Buttercup Edition] from 2006 (now unfortunately OOP) is the way to go. If you look around, you should still be able to find a copy. AFAIK, the disc contents are the same, but the set comes packaged in two different flavors.

I am interested too. But, do you mean best image quality or best packaging and extras?

There's an even newer version from this year, the 20th Anniversary edition. I haven't upgraded from VHS for this flick yet, but need to.

The lettering on the front is cool - reads the same upside down.

In a review over at DVD Talk (
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=31306), they give the the new 20th Anniversary Edition a rating of "Rent It."A certified 1980s classic, The Princess Bride remains a timeless "fractured fairytale" that's easy to get lost in. Featuring terrific performances, perfect casting and strong direction from Rob Reiner, there's hardly a dull moment from start to finish. Unfortunately, MGM's fourth DVD release in less than seven years comes up short: the technical presentation is solid enough, but the total disregard for earlier special features really kills this one. Overall, 2006's "Dread Pirate" and "Buttercup" two-disc packages remain the versions to beat...so any way you slice it, there's very little to get excited about here. The slightly improved transfer and limited new extras may intrigue die-hard fans, but there's certainly not enough here to warrant a purchase. Rent It.Meanwwhile, in their review of the Dread Pirate Edition (
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=21987), they rate it as "Highly Recommended."
They have multiple reviewers, and they tend to be fairly balanced in their criticisms, IMO. You may want to check out the reviews for yourself to see which version offers more of what is important to you personally.
Cheers,

The 2006 SE is definitely the way to go. The 20th Anniversary set is a money grab and nothing more - it's clearly inferior to the 2006 set.
Here's my review of the 20th - it includes links to my review of the 2006 DVD:

I found a copy of the Buttercup Edition on Half.Com. Snatched it right up. There were 2 on E-Bay that went for crazy (to me nayway) money.

Pardon me for being a killjoy, but why do we need THREE freakin' versions of the SAME MOVIE?
This is why I just watch my old videotapes. :)

Oh, go ahead and be a killjoy here - the "Princess Bride" DVD situation has gotten ridiculous. I'm all for DVD upgrades when they actually ARE upgrades, but some of these are nothing more than crass money-grabs... :thumbsdn:

That's what you call "crazy money" - essentially list price?

No, I said that the ones on E-Bay were going for crazy money - $35 and up PLUS shipping. THAT'S crazy money to me for a movie of this caliber. $23 including shipping is OK by me (hence the reason I bought it), especially for the best DVD version. (I'd love to see it on HD-DVD......)

Our discussion got confused. When I asked "how much", I meant "how much were the crazy money copies?" I see where you thought I meant "how much did you pay?"

Yep, it did get confused. But no harm no foul. We got it straightened out.
Now my question to you - would you pay $35 or up (and I've seen the Dread Pirate version selling for up to $69) for this version?

Already mentioned that the 2006 SE is the best:

If I really wanted it. I'm not actually a big fan of the movie - I've reviewed it four times because I get 'em for free! :D
But if I did love the film and wanted the best version of it, sure - I'd drop $35 for it. Doesn't seem like that much money, but I still remember the days of laserdiscs! ;)

Great info. Thanks to all.
Next big purchase is the full Northern Exposure, wrong music or not.

Ok, I caved, and upgraded. Found the Dread Pirate edition at FoxStore.com (
http://www.foxstore.com/detail?item=5068) for a good price. Ordered Saturday, arrived yesterday!
It was missing the slip cover, but otherwise is fine. I can live with that.
edit - I wish when you quoted something it would automatically include the previous quotes within - hard to recreate manually!

Bump -
If anyone's still looking for the Dread Pirate edition, my local Walmart has copies - so I assume alot of them do right now.
It's packaged together with Drew Barrymore's "Ever After" as a Valentine's set I guess, for $9.96. It's not with the normal dvd's though, it's in an aisle stand near the Valentine's Day stuff.
