I'm thinking of upgrading my Music Hall 2.1 to a Rega P3, but I read a review in a recent issue of Stereophile which mentioned that the review copy ran 1% fast. Do any of the P3 owners out there have this problem or is anyone aware of it regularly happening with Rega tables?

No. For some reason, in isolated incidents, some people are experiencing that.

FWIW, I bought mine in y2000. Absolutely steady, and strobe tested, NOT fast. :o)

Hi,

Obviously there are no serious problems w/ the P3 given that Mud usually complains about things moving too quickly! :D

The first, and so far only, Rega table that I had any contact with, which was quite a few years ago, did run significantly fast.

I don't know the answer to this question, but it should be noted that the P3 uses a different motor the the Planar 3. In essence the two tables "hearts" are different.

What's true for one model may not be for the other.

I have an older Planar 3, but I upgraded the motor with the P3 version. It still ran fast, as did Michael Fremer's sample ... not a whole lot, but noticeable (to me ... my wife couldn't tell the difference, even when her favorite albums were spinning). I was able to bring it to proper speed with a few layers of tape around the subplatter.

It does seem to vary from unit to unit.

I brought a new P3 early in 2002. It runs right at the correct speed.

It's a bright green color, too. I've heard that the color ones improve the sound with better focus and imaging, well worth the extra 75-100 dollars.

I recently purchased a used planar 2 and a motor upgrade kit. The unit ran fast at both 33 & 45rpm imparting a peculiar munchkin like pallor to the music. I ended up reducing the diameter of the pulley on the motor shaft by approx. .020" in order to correct the problem.

Having solved that problem I now had a turntable with virtually no rumble that increasingly picked up 60 HZ hum from the motor the closer the cartridge(GRADO) got to the center of the record. YIKES!!

Luckily I had a sheet of .025" magnetic shielding laying around from an old job that completely solved the problem. I cut two holes, one for the motor and the other for the platter shaft, spray painted it black and placed it on the top surface under the sub platter. It fit perfectly and it matches the black color of the surface surprisingly well. Also replaced the cheap lamp_cord_like signal cable with an Incognito tonearm cable kit.

If I had it to do again I probably wouldn't, except the results at this point are quite extraordinary.
