Two come to mind for me, Help! and One From the Heart, which is a visually stunning gem of a movie but the Tom Waits/Crystal Gayle soundtrack stands on it's own.

Charlie Brown Christmas! I know that doesn't really count as a movie. Plus the soundtrack is even longer than the movie.

"Natural Born Killers" is one of the only movies I've ever walked out of, but the soundtrack album is a masterpiece.

I'd say "Car Wash" qualifies for the list, and suspect "FM" does as well (don't think I've seen it).

("Porky's Revenge" is definitely the least likely candidate for an MFSL release of all the MFSL releases I own... :) )

Hendrix, Rainbow Bridge
Jesus Christ Superstar
Miles Davis, Lift to the Scaffold....though I don't want to imply that the movie is in the least bad, just that the soundtrack is more significant.

Two come to mind from the same composer, David Arnold's soundtracks for Stargate and Independence Day. Great music (specially Stargate) for dreadful movies.

Scorpio Rising.

I suppose the images achieve some kind of (sometimes ironic) synergy with the music but that's only because the music is so powerful.

An early example of a 'found' soundtrack.

Two movies with soundtracks by Peter Gabriel, Birdy and especially Passion - The last Tempation of Christ. Not that the movies are poor, but the soundtracks will probably be remembered much longer.

Agreed! It's not only my favorite soundtrack, it's one of my favorite albums; bluesy and beautiful! :righton: Although I did (and still do) enjoy the movie, it is unusual to a degree that may be offputting to some people. But it's the soundtrack that makes the movie fascinating!

Actually, the movie Legend which we are discussing here (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=134042) has TWO soundtracks that are probably better than the movie itself. And you are hearing that from someone who likes the movie. :D

I like both soundtracks but I am on record (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=3082696&postcount=11) as preferring the Jerry Goldsmith orchestral score over the Tangerine Dream score.

John Williams score for Star Wars. I remember the music long before I remember the movie.

As iconic as that score is, I don't think you'll get a lot of support for it being superior to the movie! :D
