Steve, I don't know if you've heard the Verve Master Edition of Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George Gershwin Songbook, but they released it about a year or two ago with an added bonus disc. Among the "bonus tracks" they added were 10 tracks in their original mono mixes, and just as you said, Ella's voice sounds remarkably better on those mixes. Much more lifelike, like she's there in front of you rather than an echo chamber.
Would DCC consider reissuing the album in the original mono mix on either gold CD or SACD? Verve won't do it (they don't release mono unless there's no true stereo tape to work with).
