Well, I NEVER buy anything without researching it to death, but I walked in to a deal I couldn't pass up today. I was at the Great Indoors just to look around, after hitting a few stores looking for a wii for my 5- year old for christmas.

Anyway, I see this Westinghouse 42" 1080P LCD flat panel TV. It had a clearance price of $399 on it. The salesman couldn't believe it....he said it was on clearance for $800 yesterday. I sat contemplating for a few minutes. I really don't know much about the plasma, lcd, dlp debate, and had decided to wait out this technology war for another year or so. Never had high def. before.

I figured this would be a cheap set with some crappy reviews, and after I researched a main set, this would be relegated to the bedroom. I was pleasantly surprised to read some rather good reviews online for the set.

I thought that there can be pixel problems on some flat panels, so I made sure I couldn't see anything defective or rather weird looking, but other than that I really didn't know what I should be looking for. The picture quality seemed good, but a little bright.

I have no cables. No DVI...No HDMI...Don't even have any component cables. Will get the HDTV cable box tomorrow and see what kind of cable I'll need for it. I'll get some Component cables for my dvd player, but I have been thinking about getting an OPPO and I don't think the new one has component outputs.

I have a lot of research to do.

Any words of wisdom for an HDTV Noob?

Here's the TV I bought. http://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=44

I have a Westinghouse 1080p 37" and love it. The only issue it has is a narrow viewing cone. Off to the side it washes out. In front, looks great.

Congrat's. Great price.

I would recommend a HD Tivo with HDMI output to the t.v.

Most cable companies will rent you a cable card to get HD channels on the Tivo.

Just my 2 cents whatever's it's worth.

I bought a 32" Sylvania from Big Lots about 3 months ago for $550 as an experiment & am totally amazed. Did a bunch of research, like you did & figured if it sucked, I could return it.
Am on the Sharp mailing list & they had a "Black Friday" sale for 10 hours for a 52" delivered for pennies over 2 grand. It was the model they are currently advertising on the networks, not clearance stock. Had to handcuff myself!
Will eventually move this set into the bedroom, at some point.
