I saw it in an art house when in high school. Probably filmed in the early 1970s?

It was a black and white film, maybe shot in Poland or middle Europe. Subtitles. Since I have no idea who directed it or who was in it I can't look it up!

This took place during WWII. A little Jewish boy was sent to live with a family friend who was a farmer in the country when Hitler invaded the country.

The little boy and the farmer didn't get along too well but by the end of the movie they really loved each other. The old crusty farmer was really sad when the boy went back to his family in the city after the end of the war.

Does anyone have any idea of the title of this film? It was quite wonderful and I'd like to see it again..

Could it be a French film? Because your description looks very close to Claude Berri's "Le Vieil Homme et L'Enfant" aka "The Two of Us", which was shot in black and white in 1967.

If you think this movie is Criterion-worthy, you're in for a pleasant surprise...

On a related theme, I recall a British TV film (or serial) set in WW2 about a boy sent out of London to the north of England to live with a retired man (played by the guy who played Inspector Morse) during the Battle of Britain. Anyone recall the name of this one? Maybe ten years ago?

Here's the "Filmography" of John Thaw (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0857177/), who plays Inspector Morse. Should be one of these.

Lived by a river? Great scenes of fishing? Sounds like Hope and Glory if I remember the title correctly, but I don't see that on the list posted in Tone's link.

Next time I know what movie I’ll rent … :)
But it’s possible that this movie is not so easily to be found.
Therefore it’s good to know one can buy it. :righton:

(The title means The Old man and the child.)
