So I was flipping channels last night and came across this old classic that I haven't seen in probably 20 years. Even though my affection for this film endures because it was a childhood favorite, it really blew my mind how good it made me feel now as a young adult. Great storyline with a truly fantastic ending.

The music - really awesome! :) The tripped out Star Spangled Banner, Snoopy playing Ice Hockey to fast jazz, and probably my favorite use of music in animation: Schroeder (Ingolf Dahl) playing Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata. Loved every minute of it!

I'm definitely looking to pick this up on DVD next week, so what I want to know from you guys is:

1) Is there more than one DVD version and if so which one is preferred?
2) Is there a soundtrack and if so what format is/was it available on?
3) Do you like this movie as much as I do and what are your favorite parts?! :)

I like this film as well. It's kind of trippy in a suburban way.

All the old Charlie Brown stuff is great. Very understated performances from the child actors. I saw a new CB special on TV a few days ago and there was so much over-acting it totally betrayed the spirit of Peanuts.

My favorite sequences in "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" are when Linus goes to NYC to get his blanket back...

...when CB locks himself in his room after losing the spelling bee (I think we can all relate to this in some way or another)...

...and when the kids sing to CB to teach him how to spell...

Good stuff. :)

I'd agree it's an enjoyable movie. AFAIK, there's only the one DVD - and it seems to be out of print, even though it only came out in March 2006!

Plus Snoopy and the jaw harp!

Out of print...of course :p

Read the review, too. I can definitely relate to your point about being biased from having grown up with the stuff. IIRC I saw this film repeatedly when I was younger, so the entire thing is probably glued to my memory somewhere.

But whatever - it put a smile on my face the whole time now, as it did then. And the music had a lot to do with it. However superfluous, it's still fantastic. :)

I just checked amazon.com, and the Charlie Brown Christmas DVD is also out of print. Very strange.

My one beef with the paramount DVDs is that most of the audio on the older Charlie Brown specials seem to be No-Noised.

At least I kept my un-futzed Knot's Berry Farm VHS....

(Now long gone, unfortunatly) and I remember the Snoopy Ice Skating Scene....IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! Charles Schulz did that scene SO WELL!!!...(R.I.P.,"Charlie" Schulz..and THANX for the "Peanuts" gang!):righton: Michael Boyce

Warner Brothers now has the exclusive rights to the Peanuts material. I believe they're going to start reissuing deluxe versions of the specials starting in January or February 2008.
