Saw it tonight. One of the most terrifying things I've ever seen and not in a good way. Totally void of humor which it desperately needed. The end was so depressing, I think it would give Nick Drake a hard-on. Anyone else see it?

I've heard good things about it...and it's from the director of Shawshank and The Green Mile, so I figure it's gotta be alright.
I've heard the mood is something to be seen....I like a good horror, so I'm gonna see it.
I liked 1408 so I'll probably like this...King's short stories often turn out well on the big screen, although there's been some clunkers too.

Darabont also made the abysmal "The Majestic", so he's not infallible...

Made me want to go out and end it all... Very sad movie..... Excellent acting from Marcia Gay Harden and Andre Braugher.... Did Stephen King make a cameo?? I didn't see him in it...

Worst ending of any Stephen King film ever made. And I actually worked on a few -- Sleepwalkers (with director Mick Garris) and at least one other in the early 1990s that I can't remember.
I think the reason why The Mist tanked at the box office this past weekend was due to word-of-mouth. The audience I was with actually booed when the end credits began. The ending was beyond horrible.
Whatever respect I had for director/writer Frank Darabond just went right out the window.

What exactly is wrong with the ending.I haven't seen the movie but plan on doing so real soon.
Usually when i hear that the ending of something sucks i end up thinking the opposite.
I thought Sleepwalkers was a good film.Am i the only one that feels this way?

This was the short story that turned me on to King. I even wrote a screen play years ago and tried to shop it around. The story ends on a more loose ends kinda way. The film's ending was tagged on. The last 5 mins are from the director and I found it very down but I understand the need to put a ending on a story that did not have one.
Overall I loved it. They kept it simple and stuck to the story, a lot of directors would not do that. Went to a morning showing (at 9AM) paid 2 bucks well worth the money lol

It does not suck, its just very VERY down and dark. Please everyone try not to discuss the ending on here..at least for a few weeks until those who want to see it..have.

Was there ever a TV version of this? I recall a miniseries (back when they were popular) that looked like what I saw in the TV trailers. Maybe a different story, but I really thought I had seen it on TV.

Did you get to work with Mädchen Amick? If so, I'm jealous.

There was an episode of the original "Outer Limits" with a story very similar. A mist or fog settled in on both ends of a neighborhood street and aliens or something were lurking inside. I remember the ending to that one was pretty grim as well.

I liked this story a lot too when I read eons ago. I haven't read any of King's work in close to 12-13 years (except for his usually excellent Entertainment Weekly columns). I'm hoping I'll be able to catch this Friday night.

Did not know that - or perhaps I've let other trivial things occupy my mind... but I guess everyone's allowed a stinker or two (and it's not like Stephen King is without a flawed bibliography).

Now that the word is out that the ending is depressing and dark, what's the point? It's been spoiled already as far as I'm concerned.

King only makes cameos in his mini-series. I don't think he has ever made a cameo in a movie.

Marcia Gay Harden said a great thing in a interview about this film. The real monsters were inside the store the whole time. If you have seen the film you would know.

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the movie--creepy, good-ol' fashioned monster movie like they hardly make anymore. Cool looking monsters, too. But the Harden character wears thin fast, and the rest of the cast take a veeeery long time to ask an obvious question of the obvious "suspects." And, to paraphrase Roger Ebert, "I HATED HATED HATED the ending." In fact, I filled out a questionnaire at the end of the film, and one question was "would you change the ending?" Oh yeah! I'd expect to see an alternate ending on the DVD.

I thought he was a memorable Jordy Verell. I think he did a cameo in Romero's Knightriders.

i'm not sure why a downbeat, depressing ending would be considered a bad thing for a horror movie.

Did that stop you from seeing Titanic?
