So what SACD title (just one mind you) would you like to see Steve release for a Christmas purchase or presant? Me, I would love to see Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon! :D

Speaking of Dark Side of the Moon, has anyone heard the new Japanese Pink Floyd EMI limited editions? If so, are they any good, or do you prefer other versions? I noticed they are on a couple of sites at a fairly decent price, so I'm curious.

Shalom, y'all!

Lbangs, if you are talking about the Japanese paper sleeve editions, they sound EXACTLY like the normal North American releases. No fairy dust was used (East/West Japan uses fairy dust :) and they sound much better than North American stock copies. Japan's Toshiba / EMI does not use the dust).

I was never so diappointed in my life. Maybe I'll eBay them some day.

Ummm.... just to clarify, the fairy dust comment just means it was pressed at a high quality plant and actually sounds better! Amazing what quality control can do! All the CDs from East / West Japan that I have sound excellent!

lbangs,
For Dark side of the Moon stick to the MFSL Ultradisc (Japan) and avoid any other issue including the MFSL UltradiscII version (USA). Nothing else even comes close and I've listened to at least 1/2 dozen different pressings. ;)
PS. Gary I'll put my UD1 up against your East/West Japanese pressing anytime. LOL
But hey Gary I guess I should hear your East/West version before I say that but you've heard them both what's your opinion?
:)

Boy, does speaking of DSOTM CD's rings a bell! Back in the old forum there was much discussion about the best version of them all. Didn't someone say that the stock version (the 1992 Doug Sax remaster) is the best of them all, and that the MoFi version was equalized to show off extra bass, just like the Stan Ricker LP? Supposedly, you can make your stock copy sound like the MoFi by fiddling with your equalizer, if I remember correctly.
I haven't heard the MoFi (in either incarnation), so I can't really say. I'll be looking for some of the old posts in my archives, though...

Yer breaking my heart, Dave!

;)

The Japanese Floyd CDs are done by Toshiba / EMI. They sound exactly like the domestic copies. Cool packaging but that part is not playable! Extremely disappointing!

As far as I am concerned, the Dark Side UD"1" (or "Ultradisc - made in Japan) is soooo much better than the UD2. As we heard, Dave!

:)

The Japanese papersleeve McCartney is also done by Toshiba / EMI. Same story. Picked up the Japanese Venus and Mars - ALL the minaturized inserts are included. Gatefold. Really cool but, again, you can't play the packaging. It's advisable to play the DCC version as you view the Japanese version! This is my favorite McCartney CD and I am ever so grateful that Steve and DCC remastered it!! Thanks again, Steve!

Gary,
The question is more directed in regards to how does the east/west, with it's fairy dust, compare to the UD1? ;)

I always thought UD1s were identical to UD2s. Assuming they are the same digital series of bits, how can one be better than the other?

Or were they mastered separately?

I also thought I read on a Mofi site that that UD1 and UD2 are identical - same mastering, different pressing plant.

Gentlemen & Ladies,
The scoop on the MFSL's is that the UD1's were manufactured in Japan and the Ud2's were manufactured after that in the US where they were produced until their demise. The problem IMHO is that American cd manufacturers had never done anything close to what the Japanese had done with the MFSL recordings so they really didn't have the experience with such strict standards as the Japanese did. It becomes more apparent throughout their productions from the point of UDCD 568 Queen: A Night At The Opera when American production took over and the quality of their recordings became more hit & miss, some good, some suck. Gary, the gentleman 3 postings up, was at my home and we compared both UD1 & UD2 Pink Floyd: DSTM and the difference is like night and day the UD1 blew the UD2 right off the face of the earth, no kidding. I've done about 1/2 a doz. comparisons between UD1 & UD2, P.Floyd, Santana, E. Clapton: Slowhand, C. Stevens: T 4 The Till. Who: Who R U, Who: Tommy, etc., with the same result, not always as dramatic as P.Floyd but very noticeable, the UD1 is better. Hope this helps everyone. Phew! :)

Interesting, thanks Dave. I have the 1/2 speed vinyl, but should probably acquire a UD1 eventually.

But back to the thread, how about Days Of Future Past? Steve's version would be phenominal I bet. Imagine the strings with that warm, lively sound...

Was there an MFSL vinyl issue? I have an original wax, redbook and MFSL redbook as well. Is there another I should get?

Hi Tia,
Yes they did release Days Of Future Past on vinyl as well as both gold cd editions. For future reference, in regards to audiophile gold cds and vinyl, check out this site http://pages.prodigy.net/amicus1/peach.htm
it will answer all your MFSL/DCC and many other manufacturers questions. :D

Yes, I'd like to see that. Oh, and why do you call me Tia?

Dave

Pigmode,
Well the reason that I called you Tia is because in one of your many postings your post finished with Tia I surmized that it was probably your name (like I've never been wrong before in my life).
Guess what arrived in my mailbox today?
That's right!! The Moody Blues: Days Of Future passed and guess what? God you're brilliant! It is better than the UD2. Sounds a lot more like vinyl. Looks like I'll be selling another UD2. ;)
