I'm thinking of upgrading from my Music Hall MMF-5 turntable to the MMF-7. Does anyone know how much of a difference there is between the MMF-5 and the MMF-7? I know a lot of people like the Rega Planar 3, but the store I go to doesn't carry Rega. (If I return my MMF-5, I can apply it's FULL cost towards the MMF-7 because I got the MMF-5 less than a year ago!!! In other words, for just $500 plus returning the MMF-5, I can get the MMF-7) Has anyone here ever owned an MMF-7? If so, what did you think of it?

Why don't you ask Peter Braverman at Red Trumpet?

He's a good guy and would know.

I don't want to sound like a pest again, but how does one adjust the speed (pitch %) of these audiophile tables? Thanks.

One doesn't.
Most belt-driven turntables don't let that happen...

Wags,
looks like we shop at the same stores. :)
I can't answer the question about the difference between the 5 and 7, not having heard the 5, but I second what Wags says. I spend a lot more time listening to vinyl with the 7 than my digital counterparts. Even pre-ordered DSoTM vinyl to make sure I got it, while hoping I'll find the SACD in a store somewhere/sometime because it wasn't as important as the vinyl.

Me again. :)

Sooooo, I am assuming they have some sort of on-board automatic speed control to make up for the typical household's A/C voltage and current fluctuations?

Just taking a guess, but I think it is a heavy duty motor of high quality that is able of absorb the fluctuations. The motor on the 7 is fairly heavy.

Here are the devices used for speed control on a few of the tables
ClearAudio - Accurate Power Generator
VPI - SDS Synchronous drive system
SME - External control unit
Oracle - Turbo Power line conditioner
Roksan - XPS5 Speed controller
All the best - Andrew

I think that makes a pretty strong statement about the MMF-7 (or maybe it says the Pioneer's SACD playback sucks. )
Without trying to sound insulting, I think SACD is lacking on the Pioneer Elite players. The '47Ai is better than the original '47A, but it still is not as good as the Sony ES models or some of the other players out there in and around its price point. I'm not trying to spend your money, but you might want to listen to SACD on the Sony SCD-C555ES (if you can still find one), Sony DVP-NS999ES, Marantz SACD-8260, and Marantz DV-8300. The Pioneer Elite players sound thin in comparison to these models. Just my $0.02. :)

I ended up trading in the MMF-5 for the MMF-7. They said it takes 40 hours to break in the MMF-7. It already sounds better than the MMF-5 though!

I don't know about this table but my Linn LP12 (belt drive) uses the Valhalla or Lingo to set the speed and it CAN be adjusted mechanically on the table by two screws which adjust to motor/pulley position, I believe. While this may not be construed as 'pitch' control in the sense that it is not easily done as others, it can be set to account for variances between tables, environment (temperature/humidity), to get it on the mark.
