View Full Version : Animal House - 25 years this year!

Animal House, still going on a quarter of a century later remains on my top 5 movie list.
Bluto, Otter, Boon, Stork, Pinto, Flounder and all the others, man what a great cast of characters. Quite a movie for usuing virtually unknown actors and actresses (save for John Belushi, the highest paid of the cast at $40,000.) This was also I believe Kevin Bacon's screen debut as well.
This is one of those that'll hold up well for another 25 years from now IMO.
Since this is the silver anniversary for this movie, I'm wonderin' if there are any plans for a deluxe version on DVD?

Except for the awkward scene where the kids crash a blacks-only nightclub, a perfect comedy and the best thing John Landis ever did. Great lines and scenes all around, and who can forget "Let's Dance" and that wild redo of "Louie, Louie"?:D. Some priceless stuff here.
And remember: be careful or you'll find yourself on Double Secret Probation, a little known codisil in the Faber charter.
"Yes Sir, May I have another?"(THWACK!!)...."Yes Sir, May I have another?"(POW!!), "Yes Sir....

THe ending was a bit of a downer, but the rest of the film makes up for it. A CLASSIC!

Any film featuring a automotive beast known as the "Deathmobile" has to be alright:D
Wonder how Bluto's been doing in Washington? Been a U.S. senator for 25 years now!

"Animal House" opened when I was a junior in collge. Not surprisingly, it swept the campus like wildfire. Attended a few toga parties that year!

It is funny, but the tone is different compared to the rest of the film. Unlike the scene where Otter gets beaten up, it doesn't move the story along. It's just there, as if Landis were trying to make some kind of social comment. The Marx Brothers did that better; even so, it's still a great ride of a movie. Comedy is the toughest kind of cinema to get right, and a lot of it dates quickly. This one has aged very well, I think.

Compared to all the poor imitators, Animal House was a stroke of genius. I still like watching it periodically.
If not for this movie, the song "Shout" might have remained obscure forever. It wasn't a huge hit originally, and it had literally disappeared before it made its important appearance in this movie (though sung by a cover group). So for that, if nothing else, we should be grateful.

Today's trivia: in the movie, that's guitar phenom Robert Cray playing bass(??) for Otis Day & the Knights. Have a look! :agree:

I was a freshman in college that Fall so this movie made a big impact on my College Years. We were very similar, the Dean of our school knew us well.
It's kind of neat to be called into the Dean's Office when your in your College Years. :D

Yeah, about as funny as a PM from your friendly neighborhood Gort:rolleyes:
I always dug the guy's name: 'Dean Wormer,' which is pretty self-explanatory. John Vernon was perfect as the dean; 'not a nice guy at all' as the british might put it.
Also, the cast hasn't done too badly since, many of them. We know what happened to Belushi and Doug Kenney(nasty, fatal fall in Hawaii), but others did okay: Tim Matheson now plays the VP on THE WEST WING; Tom Hulce played Mozart in AMADEUS; Mark Metcalf played The Master(demon)in the first season of moi's beloved BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER; Stephen Furst went on to BABYLON 5; Bruce McGill was a key MacGuyver co-star; Kevin Bacon hasn't done too badly, with FOOTLOOSE his big credit; Martha Smith(she's the topless chick in the window Belushi is ogling in the ladder scene; she later becomes "Mrs. Blutarski":D went on to SCARECROW AND MRS. KING.

I was a student at Notre Dame when the movie came out, and many people on campus noticed the similarity in nomenclature between "Dean Wormer" and our very own Dean of Students at the time, "Dean Roemer." We were assured that it was mere coincidence. :)

Verna Fields, who played Mrs. Wormer, starred (along with Robert Forster) in Haskell Wexler's film about the '68 Democratic convention "Medium Cool" ten years earlier.

And as for John Vernon, he was later a police brutality specialist in both Fraternity Vacation and Killer Klowns From Outer Space.

That still kills me when the "Eat Me" cake float breaks away to reveal the "Deathmobile"!! One of my favorite scenes is when Dean Wormer puts the entire frat on academic probation and Hoover tries to sugar coat the situation about their grades being a bit low, but they hoped to make up for it at mid term, and one of the other frats blurts out "HA!!!!"
