I've been keeping my eye out for this excellent film, which has been unavailable for awhile - now available again, just released.

Is this film the same as the "revolutionary opera" of the late 1960s?

Yes, this is a wonderful film. I bought this film on DVD around ten years ago, from a shop on Gerrard Street in London (I had to wait a couple of years before I possessed a player though). That was a Hong Kong region 0 disc, and it was terrible! There were no chapters, no extras and the picture quality was worse than my copy on VHS!

So, I take it that there is still no definitive version released on DVD as yet?

No, it's from 1991 and based on the novel "Wives And Concubines".

The "red lantern" is the symbol for which wife is in favor and will enjoy the attention of the master. In the end, there are consequences for a scheming "wife".

Gong Li stars and it is a very interesting film, with no martial arts and no flying through-the-air.

This new DVD release is as good as it's likely to get and I recommend this carefully-paced thoughful film highly.

See my link above for screen captures and the link below for more info on the story.

Good to know...I haven't watched my VHS in years, but you've given me the bug.
