In the world of photojournalism, POY is a bit like the Oscars (except POY isn't fixed ;) ).

I love this one, and I'm also a big fan of Eugene Richards' work.
At first it's a big hard to read, but I find it haunting, beautiful and sad.

This is a sweet, wonderful and timeless moment. An honest, wistful slice of Americana. Seems simple enough to "grab" this kind of image but, trust me, it's not!

This one needs a long look. It's stark simplicity is it's power. Classic lines of composition help convey this man's difficult role in life.
You need the words to fill in the details. Once you know this man is a single father of several children, is ill, and is struggling financially, the image becomes powerful and emotional.
Again, this kind of photo is deceptively simple. I can look at it for hours.

That one of the two kids in Afghanistan changing the tire is pretty amazing. Tough to believe that kid is only 7 years old.
