I really miss those quadraphonic releases. There's so much lost when it's folded down into stereo. The doppler distortion alone is ample reason to keep them separate. Then, when I read in an old thread that some studio had a habit of chopping off the treble of works like Jefferson Airplane when they down-converted it into a stereo mix, I was hoping someone would rerelease the unadulterated masters. Plus, since they would seem new to the mass market, one wouldn't have to tamper with it to make it "sound" like the hit by adding distortion. Just a repeated thought for the new forum.

The following site is run by a die-hard quadophile. His DTS transfers are amazing. He's a great guy, you may want to contact him. http://hometown.aol.com/matrixquad/about.htm

Mart / Tommy, can I ask a dumb question? Can you play a quad mix on a normal 2 channel stereo? How does it sound - garbled? Mixed? Listenable?

I passed on a quad Japanese Wish You Were Here 2 CD set once. I keep thinking about it... did I make (another) mistake?

TOM -- Have a few by him already thanks for the heads-up anyway. They're very good quality for bootlegs but are very limited by the transfer medium. For instance the 8-tracks have no dynamic range & no bass. The good part about the alter is I can crank the sub in the defacto 4.1 mix. :p
Bread - Best Of (QR)
Carpenters - The Singles (Fostex Q8)
Collins, Judy - Colors Of The Day "Best Of " (QR)
Doors - Best Of (QR)
Eagles - One of These Nights (Fostex Q8)
Guess Who, The - Best Of (QR)
Jefferson Airplane - The Worst of (QR)
Jethro Tull - Aqualung (QR)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (Tate SQ)
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres (QR) ;)

GARY -- Never had a SQ decoder so I don't know, but DTS won't play at all unless you have a DTS decoder somewhere. :(

Thanks, Mart. I don't think the WYWH was DTS - just a normal Quad CD.

There's a few bootlegs that are quad mixes, like the WYWH you mentioned. But they're simply folded down to stereo. You can still hear differences in the mix. I've seen these on ebay, special collectors sets (Pink Floyd, Lennon, McCartney). But the best way is the DTS cds (legit or homegrown). Some of the the handmade DTS cds do sound sound very good, especially the ones sourced from reels or vinyl.

Since the effort to achieve a DTS playback chain is a tad higher than just gathering up two speakers and an amp, mos people concentrate on listening to DTS mixes in the correct way. That being said, it's kinda dumb to listen to a DTS (or 4 channel) CD folded down, unless you want to just fold down the center channel though what your receiver or preamp can do in that capacity. THAT being said, most of the DTS CDS I own both legit and homegrown are seriously lacking when you fold them down into two speakers.

Go the extra mile, if you're curious. I promise you, it's worth every ounce of effort, and that's why in this great world, there's a few hundred nutty, insane Quad-fanatics that pay big money to get the old Fostex and Quad playback units. They fight tooth and nail on eBay and yard sales to get those scary, dusty old units and reels. Take a look on eBay (look for "quad reels", when they're in auction or "Q8" - they're not selling for peanuts).

They do their job, all you have to do is get your modern DTS playback chain and enjoy. Life is good that way.

There's a WYWH quad floating around, and it's great, but I believe it's from a Q8, and has a tad of NR over it. It's the 4-Channel reels that are fabulous, and get mastered to DTS suprisingly well! Love my Moody Blues 4-Channel reel to DTS.

Have a couple legit Moody Blues DTS CDs along with about 30 others. They're cool. I wish there were more.

I saw Edgar Winter Group's TOCOAN was available in quad. Man, "Frankenstein" ought to $%@!@# ROCK!!! :D

Well, "Frankenstein" & "Free Ride" from Edgar winter Group did not disappoint. However, I still wish I had an authentic published DTS CD version. It was almost like a very worthwhile tease. http://ubb.fanasylum.com/smiles/smokin.gif And, having the Rick Derringer's "Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo" helps complete the Winter's sonic picture to me.

The compiled CD is a sentimental journey down the quadraphonic era. From "China Grove" to "Smoke on Water", I feel I was reliving my youth.
Iron Man (Q8) - Black Sabbath
Smoke on the Water (Q4) - Deep Purple
We're an American Band (Q8) - Grand Funk
Rocky Mountain Way (Q8) - Joe Walsh
Walk This Way (Q8) - Aerosmith
Light My Fire (Q8) - Doors
Free Ride (Q8) - Edgar Winter
That's Rock and Roll (Q8) - Eric Carmen
Highway Star (Q4) - Deep Purple
Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo (Q8) - Rick Derringer
China Grove (Q4) - Doobie Brothers
Sweet Emotions (Q8) - Aerosmith
Elected (Q8) - Alice Cooper
Frankenstien (Q8) - Edgar Winter
Hot and Nasty (Q8) - Humble Pie
Must Have Got Lost (Q8) - J. Giels Band
Two Lane Highway (Q8) - Pure Prairie League
No More Mr Nice Guy (Q8) - Alice Cooper

If these bootlegs were of quadraphonic mastertape quality I'd be in http://ubb.fanasylum.com/smiles/love.gif . Hmmm ... looking at Ozzy's Black Sabbath, I wonder if any of Osbourne's albums with Randy Roads were released on quad. Uh oh, there's an eminent danger of jubilant overload .... http://ubb.fanasylum.com/smiles/nuke24.gif

The Alice Cooper tracks and the Deep Purple tracks you mentioned are already available on DVD-A, albeit in 5.1 mixes as opposed to quad. I cannot speak for the Purple, but the Cooper seems almost identical to the old quad mix, with the addition of a center channel (all of the quad mix anomolies are there, extra solo's and different verses in "Raped and Freezing", etc.). I expect if you set your amp to "no center channel", it would be the same as the quad.

The Doobie Brothers comes out sometime later this month....
