You guys who are always looking for a great way to get into the audio game for a low budget, I just found the answer:

The Advent 300 reciever!

Fantastic sound and you can go out through the pre out jacks to have a nice preamp/tuner/phono preamp combination...

You should be able to get a nice one for 150-200 bucks....

Running mine through my (current vintage) MC275 and am very impressed!

Look for some mods to this baby in the future!

Oh Ya, Had one in the day, about '76, '78 or so. Had a great sounding FM tuner. Used it to drive some Akai SW155s and later Klipsch Hereseys. I remember one night with the Advent blasting, The Cops that were called because of the noise were in the back room sharing a joint and the city manager and the city accountant's wife were drinking beer out of one of the garbage men's boots. Man , those were the days of good town managment.

Terrific phono stage - designed by Tom Holman. In fact, I'd reckon that many people use it these days strictly for that.

I still use one in my main system. I always liked the look of it, I have the black one.

Using the phono with a Grado Signature, not quite enough gain...
(only .5mv) But anxious to try it with some others with more output.

Like what I hear so far!

Boy this is a great place to start for a budget system!! Tons of fun

:righton: Got one off of Craigslist about a year ago for $35! Great phono pre and pre-amp and a small power amp.

The beauty of this unit is that it has two output sources. One with volume control for pure poweramps (by 'breaking' the link on the back panel) and one netural out for general use.

And the unit has the always useful mono button.

Great units! Funny that you're mentioning them, I just recapped mine last week. If you have one that hasn't been recapped, eventually you'll want to get it done in order to extend the life of the unit. The good news is that it's an easy job for a novice. I had never recapped anything before and I did this one all on my own.

Some good technical info on the Advent 300:

The sound on these is truly remarkable. And I think they look pretty cool, too.

I remember those from back in the day when they were current. It seemed like a lot of my parents freinds had one of these, teamed with Ohm or Advent or AR speakers, and probably all bought from Tweeter (or whatever the big chain store was in the Boston area circa 1970s).

How does it compare to your Yamaha CA-2010? :)

Hi,

I really love these Advent receivers for bedroom systems and use as tuner/preamps. They sound superb with efficient speakers and have a superb tuner and phono stage. They can be had reasonably too. Also, they make great office systems.

How does it compare to your Yamaha CA-2010? :)The CA-2010 seems to me to be a little more laid back and neutral than the 300. It's silky smooth. The 300 is a little more forward (not brighter, but slightly punchier). The low-end on it will really kick your butt. I usually don't mess with the tone cotrols on my gear, but the ones on the 300 really seem to do what they're supposed to without sounding like they're adding too much "off" coloration.

I'll say this -- it's hard to believe that the 300 is only 15 wpc. It can get respectably loud.

I haven't compared the phono sections with the same table/cart combo. I really should try that.

A friend of mine worked at a Tech Hi Fi and had one of these Advent receivers. I remember going over to his house and listening to David Bowie. I remember thinking it sounded real good and it was one of my first real exposures to good audio equipment.
