View Full Version : Witchfinder General - Finally on DVD!
Midnite Movies has just released a few new titles including this Vincent Price classic. Some of you know this one as the Conqueror Worm. Laser Blazer in Los Angeles ran out so I didn't have a chance to buy it. I get mine on Friday. Other obscure titles as well like the no budget cheapo 'The Beast With 1,000,000 Eyes'. Joy Joy!

How does this look? The BBC have shown this twice in the last year and the version they aired had the previously censored scenes restored. The problem was that these were significantly poorer quality.
From Beyond? One of my top ten horror flicks, I'm all over this.

Still not in stock! They tell me the shipment will probably arrive on Saturday. I will let you know of the transfer as soon as I get my hands on it. - Xman

I might spring for this, but completists should note:
"This is the British director's cut version of the film, so it doesn't feature the opening and closing US narration by Vincent Price (reciting stanzas from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Conqueror Worm"), nor does it feature the continental version's nude tavern wenches as seen in all previous home video releases of the film under its US release title, THE CONQUEROR WORM. The loss of the Kendall Schmidt score is nothing to cry about, of course, but these other omissions fall under the heading of necessary ephemera as far as we collectors and completists are concerned. They really should have been included here as extras."
This according to one of my favorite sources of cult video, Tim Lucas of Video Watchdog magazine. I haven't seen the film in years so I don't know how much it would effect my enjoyment of it.

This was shown on TCM recently. I'm not sure which version they showed although I think it was titled "Witchfinder General" not "The Conqueror Worm". Those interested in recording it might want to keep an eye out for it. TCM tends to replay movies over every 3 or 4 months. Friday night/Saturday morning seems to be horror/cult movie time these days.

Same problem with The Wicker Man: restored (erotic) scenes are of poor quality.

Those scenes were added on against the director's wishes. They were not part of the original film.No great loss.

Isn't this film included in the new Vincent Price boxed set?
The nude(topless) tavern girls were shown on the BBC's print (but I can't remember if these were in the poorer quality, it was mainly the drownings/torture scenes.

It certainly is. (

Along with The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Tales of Terror, Theater of Blood, Madhouse, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, and Twice Told Tales. I might have to spring for the whole set. Unlike some collectors, I don't really mind that the set features the DVDs in slimline cases.
And I guess I can do without the nude tavern wenches.
