Hi!
I've tried searching but I didn't find any suitable answers... so here goes...
How would you know when it's time to change your stylus?
Sorry if it's seems elementary... I really need to know

I don't use a microscope or anything to inspect it, but there's an unmistakable sound coming from your records that will let you know when it's time. Sibilance usually starts becoming a problem, and you start itching to take the record off the platter as it nears the end of a side because it's no longer tracking the inner grooves as it should. As soon as I hear it, I stop playing all records until the stylus or cartridge is replaced.

Thanks a lot for all the replies, yeah, I'm beginning to hear more sibilance on records that didn't have that problem before. I guess most people want to delay buying a cartridge because of the costs involved and hope to get more mileage from them. By the time they realise, it's too late! I guess it's time to make a change.

I would say if you start hearing those things you are waiting too long to change it.

I replace mine once a year regardless of how many hours it's had on it...:) As a matter of fact, I'm just about due for a new one.

Hi,
I replace my stylus after 12 months (or 2000 sides). Whichever comes first.

The old rule of thumb always used to be 750-1000 hours of use, so assuming it's used with care then around 2000-2500 sides sounds about right. It's certainly no good leaving it until the sound deteriorates because you'll then need to replace all your records as well.:(
