View Full Version : Defective Taiyo Yuden CDR's?

I have been using T-Y discs almost exclusively for the last two years or so. Lately, I am noticing what I can only desribe as "blotches" on the data side of the disc after burning. Some are quite large, and burn speed seems to make no difference as to whether or not these "blotches" appear on the discs. Oddly enough, the "blotch" discs do rip and play okay, but I'm concerned about the longevity of such discs. Has anyone else seen these odd "stains" on Taiyo Yuden CD's? What could be causing this? I have noticed that sometimes the pattern is comma-shaped, as if you dropped a drop of paint onto a surface and then started spinning it.

I go through about 300 Taiyo Yuden CDs a month and I've never seen this. Have you tried a different burner?

I bought a 25 pack of 80 minute TY discs recently from CD-R Outlet that are playing back "scratchy" on my Adcom, at least the ones I've burnt so far. Previous batches have never been a problem. I need to contact the store...

There are a lot of fake TY CD-Rs out there. Are you sure they are genuine?

I use two vendors for the CD's, Polyline and U-line. Both reputable enough not to stock bogus T-Y discs. The "blotch" I'm talking about almost looks like there was something on the surface of the CD prior to burning, and the laser was casting a shadow onto the dye layer. But the CD's are absolutely dust-free when I put them in. Very strange. When CD writers have reached the end of their life, it's pretty obvious, but I don't think this is the case, even though this one has been going for a year, and that's a very long time. I tried scanning a disc but you can't see the blotch. Thanks for your replies.

YES! I know exactly what your talking about!!! Those blotches can sometimes be indicators of a bad batch. I had those things pop up on some DVD-R's and every single time they popped up, the data would go bad.

I hope that's not the case with your CD-r's but it was always the case with my DVD-r's.

Good luck!

I don't think it's an issue with the CD burner because I've never seen that on Mitsui or Ritek. I'm going to start saving these "blotch" discs and demand a refund!

I don't think it's a problem with the burner. It turned out to be a really bad batch of Ritek DVD-R's with me.

Hope you can get a refund.

It got so that every disc had a crescent-shaped "shadow" on it. And it was the same "shadow", in the same spot, on every disc. But I opened up a new cake of Taiyo-Yuden CD's, and NONE of them in the new cake did that. So no more Taiyo-Yuden CD's, if I can't depend on them I have no use for them. I'm going to go with Mitsui, I switched from Mitsui to T-Y about two years ago to save a few bucks, they're a little cheaper. But they aren't cheaper if I have to re-print and re-burn 10% of every job.

The way that "stain" appears so consistenly makes me think that the discs are somehow out of balance, and the vibration while they spin throws the disc to one side, like having too many towels in the washing machine. So the laser doesn't "hit" exactly where it's supposed to at the spot where it's shifting.

300 a month? How?

I now only use TY CDRs and haven't had a problem with a single one. Although I've only used about 20 of them so far.

Jaimie Tate, what website is your favorite to purchase them from? I'm looking to buy some more shortly.

Tape Online (http://www.tapeonline.com/search.aspx?q=taiyo%20yuden&o=0). They're right down the street from me.

I use the white printable hub CDs.

Jamie, WATCH THOSE DISCS. I go through a couple hundred a month myself, and I saw this before, a few months ago, and now I'm seeing it again. And just to make ABSOULTELY sure, I replaced the CD writer with a brand new one. Same comma-shaped "shadow" on the test CD from the old cake when burned on the brand-new writer. The last three digits of the stamped number of the "shadow" discs is 280, on the discs that burn correctly without the "stain" it's 180. So it's a batch problem, for sure.

Although I am somewhat relieved to know what the problem is and how to fix it (stop buying T-Y CD's!!) that doesn't relieve me of the stress and worry about lord-knows-how-many discs that are out there in the field that might go bad and I'll have to replace. :realmad: :realmad: :realmad:
