I'm in the process of fitting my Project Debut III with an AT-440mla cart. I know it needs to be aligned, checked for tracking force, anti-skate, etc., but do I need a test LP to do this? The headshell is not removable and it has fixed holes. I fiddled with the included OM5E earlier, and I don't see how it's possible for the alignment or azimuth to be altered whatsoever. I know how to adjust anti-skate, and I have a stylus force gauge as well. Do I need to spend the bucks on a Hi-Fi News or other test LP?

You really do not need a test record to optimize the setup procedure. This can be done with any record and fiddling with the adjustments until the music is satisfying to you. A test record like HiFi News is useful & will speed up the process, however, not mandatory.

I agree, given that the headshell is fixed and it has fixed holes rather than adjustable slots there is not a lot of alignment you can do. The main use of a test record in a setup like yours would be a check that nothing is drastically off the mark and could do harm to your records.

I'd say pass on the test LP for now. And I was going to suggest getting a cartridge with a stylus shape that was less demanding as far as alignment, but I see you've already gotten the 440MLa.

Azimuth ('tilt' when looking at the cart head-on at eye level) can be corrected rather easily by adding some sort of shim between cartridge and headshell (paper, washers, etc.)

The real problem is see here is zenith (the one you set with a protractor, I believe it's called that). From what I've read using a cart with an 'advanced' tip such as the one on the 440MLa without proper alignment will cause increased record wear.

A couple things you could try:

- See if you can find a set of 'skinny' screws so you have a split millimeter of play to, er, play with. You could also enlarge the holes on the headshell if you're handy.

- File or cut slots into the headshell.

- Use only one screw and hold the cartridge in place with double-sided tape (the one that is like foam).

Good luck!

Its been said already but you don't need a test LP. It can help get that last 5% or whatever optimized, but in general you can do it my eye/ear with great results. Enjoy!
