Anyone see this DVD or pick up the recent 2CD release?

I am watching it now, and I have to say I am severely disspointed. Don't get me wrong, I think it is great they are releasing a live audio and video version of their latest tour showing the "performance" of Mindcrime I and II.

But, it is really bad in several ways. First, the mix/sound. Geoff Tate's vocals are so ridiculously overdubbed! I mean, it sounds like they just laid the studio track on top of the mix. No attempt to make the vocals sound "live" or give them the you-are-there feeling. The instruments are mixed way too dry, just like you're listening to a studio recording. No indication that they're playing in a theater. The crowd noise is completely out of the mix during the songs as well.

Second is the directing. Very amatuerish. You can see where the sometimes try to make good edits, angles and such. But it comes off very second-rate.

Glad I rented this first! Definitely not worth a purchase IMO. Makes me realize just how good the Nine Inch Nails "Beside You In Time" DVD/HD DVD/Bluray is from a sound and direction standpoint.

Thanks for the review.

One thing that I can't stand is poorly overdubbed vocals on live videos. Such a ripoff.

If you can't perform live, then don't release a "live" album or dvd.

Period.

Please.

Stop.

I can't take it anymore.

You betcha. Wish I had better news to report on this one.

I still can't get over the bad vocals. And I am really not trying to be picky here, but this borders on absurd. When Tate sings, it literally sounds like they lifted the vocal track from the original 1988 release and mixed them in with whatever "performance" they used. I had to closely listen to 2 songs to make sure it was a different vocal than what's on the original album! Even worse, they'll show Tate talking to the crowd between verses (not songs), but no sound comes out

The directing looks like something you gave my high-school video class as a two-week editing project. It's even filmed with 480i/60fps video cameras! At least it's widescreen, but it looks as though it was shot on gear you'd buy at Best Buy.

I want to do my best to support my favorite rock bands, but they're going to have to put out something better than this to get my dollar. :sigh:

EDIT: oh goody. I found a youtube clip: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HmfN7Fu2d6A

The bad overdubs aren't as apparent on this clip (or are they?), but you gotta trust me on this one. Listening on a good surround system makes it even more apparent.

Their other live DVD sucks too. Sounds like it was recorded in a well.

The MOORE is pretty much just that. Seriously, Ryche could have been playing that club as early as 1982.

I saw them here in Portland the night AFTER they recorded the show in Seattle. It was good, but again, the venue was not the best (Roseland). I saw them just one year prior at "The Shnitz" here in Portland and it was as close to a perfect performance as I've heard from a metal band. They should have recorded that show. The theatrics were MUCH better as well!

I have the original Live Crime... I'm sticking with that.
