I have read many opinions on the Maggies for around 600 buck, I have like what I have read. I have a Dj Soundcraftsman shoebox amp, Mosfet 300 watts per @ 4 ohms. Is this ok for this speaker. I do have a powered sub as well.

I have a pair of Athena asf2, I like these, but I think I would like to upgrade.

Anyone, have you heard the Maggies & the Athenas? Thanks Bryan

I think there is a free trial period Magnepan offers with those. Try them out and see if they are a fit (your amp is fine). :)

The biggest problem you'll encounter with the Maggies is that they are di-polar.

If your room is odd shaped, that will cause you more set up concerns that a traditional speaker. They also like a lot of air, so placement will probably be further out into your room than you are used to.

It's a hassle, but more than worth the effort!

Buy some $20 fake ficus trees behind the dipole Maggies to break up the back wave and problem solved. :agree:

It requires a little more than that....

That and placement work Jeff. Been doing this successfully since 1990 with Maggies. :righton:

I find they work best at one end of a rectangular room and start witht the Cardas planar placement formula.

I found that a curtain on the rear wall or cloth on the back of the ribbon tweeters helped
when the Maggies sounded "too hot" in the room, or lacked separation.

You need a huge power transformer on your amp. I could run mine from my 45 y.o. Stromberg,
but it has a large power transformer for the mere 7 watts. My new ASL 30wpc easily drives them.

Oddly, I miss the mylar tweeters that my MG-1's had and my "modern"
IIIa's lack, they have a ribbon tweeter (some say the finest ever made).

The IIIas tweeter is among the best I have had but the 3.6s is slightly better as they tweaked the design. Both are superb.

Thom, I have to hear your system with the new ASLs at some point. :)
