View Full Version : What DYNAMICALLY BALANCED tonearms do you know of?

A "dynamically balanced" tonearm is one where, in the absence of other forces, the counterweight is tuned to balance the tonearm to be perfectly level. Another force (that is non-gravitational in nature) applies the VTF. Usually, this is a spring.

Examples that I know of include a lot of SME tonearms, including the IV and V, the Dynavector DV-505, and IIRC a couple Micro Seiki tonearms. Tonearms that are NOT dynamically balanced include anything whose VTF is set exclusively by the counterweight, and all Rega tonearms (they use a spring, but only to reduce the counterweight VTF, not to eliminate it).

Can anybody think of some others?

JVC QL-Y55F, tracking force applied by some sort of servo system. And it sounds mighty good.

If you are patient, you can set the Rega spring to zero
and just set the VTF with the weight....

Sounds a little better that way!

I think all the old Dual idler drive tables featured stock arms with dynamic balancing--certainly the 1009F and the ones in the 12xx series did.
