Assuming I have a total budget of 5k, and I am looking at this equipment.

But I really would like the ability to play dvds also. So with a 5k total budget. There is about 3750 here from my calculations and so that leaves about 1000 for cabling, and possibly a switch in cd/dvd transports. Any suggestions

Wow, 1K for cables?
Do you have any dealers nearby who can lend you a couple of them for a while? You could try deciding for yourself whether expensive cables can make a difference for you. If they do, you'll be glad you bought them. If they don't, you'll be glad you didn't! :)

Hi haibane,
Try the Cable Company (here (
http://www.fatwyre.com)).
You can rent cables you're interested in hearing for a period of two weeks.
If you decide to purchase, they deduct the rental costs from the purchase price.
Nice folks too. I used them years ago when comparing various vibration control devices and various cables.
Best regards,
Barry

I like Cardas cables a lot. They offer all sorts of pricing but the sonics improve steadily up the line. The Neutral Reference are a particularly good deal and can be found on Audiogon frequently.

Personally I would allocate more to the speakers and reduce the cabling amount. You can get the two pair of interconnects and a pair of speaker cables that would complijment the system for less than $500 if you shop carefully.
Money should only be spent on cables once you have the balance of the system right. There are too many people who spend a $1000 on a cable only to use it with $500 component.
Try a couple. Just don't get anything you can't return.
EDIT: What Tommy said, too.

The Shanling CDP is good, but much more expensive that the rest of the kit you are buying.
If you also want DVD I would suggest to get a decent DVD palyer (they can be had for around $100) and a relatively good DAC(there are a lot of quite good one around $500). Make sure that the DVD player works well as a transport; there is a Pioneer DVDP that is very often recommended as transport, if you are interested I can do a search. If you are interested in SACD and DVD-A the Oppo would be the best solution: it is very good with DVD and excellent value, but be warned, I have tried it as a transport with a good DAC and IME is an awful transport, although many will disagree.
$1,000 for cables is a lot for this sort of kit: you should be perfectly allright with good value IC like Grover, Mogami, Blue Jeans; I have tried plenty of good value IC and IMO the Speltz anti IC ($100) is head and shoulders above the competition at its price point.
With the money saved from CDP and cables I would get better amp/speakers

I have never really been a "cables help guy" so that was why I thought I would try some good ones this time around. Tommy, can you recommend any better more transient and unforgiving monitors than the ones I plan on using? Vic, I would rather just use a dvd player I have now and get the shangling on the side if that was a feasible solution. The thing is I like my records a lot, but I only have so many and I have nearly 300 CDs so it seems feasible to invest more in the CD department. Again guys if you have any better recommendations for equipment I am up for some give. The one reason I wanted this thread was so I knew what cables be it rcas optical etc. and how many of each I need based on which inputs/outputs you guys might have tried on these units. However I really wanted to know some input on hardware too

Do you want to go strictly powered, or opt for a possible power-amp speaker setup?
If it was up to me there would be a law that stated one (1) cable type per company! I hate that you go to X cable company and for an extra $$ you get better sound. That leads me to think sometimes that some cables are purposely designed to sound LESS than the higher priced ones!! Just let the friggin signal pass through! What I say!!:realmad: ...Capitalism was invented for cables lol!!....Feel better now! :shh: :) :D

Alright. thanks. These seem to be passive, but still look neat. I would need to do both amp and speakers in budget too

Lee any idea where do you think I could audition the M00? Cause all their dealers appear to be out of country, but you seem to be in hotlanta so you should know.

With cables you're going to want the ones that happen to match up well with your gear for you. My advice would be to set up your system first. Listen to it with some basic inexpensive cables. Then decide for yourself what kind of "flavoring" if any you would prefer in your system. If you pretty much like how it sounds try some Cardas Neutrals for example.

I don't think we have a local retailer on the consumer side but I recall seeing them at some of the pro sound shops. Call around some of our local music shops.

You could also consider the AudioEngine powered speakers as well, which are a bit less money, and are made to be used as stereo speakers, rather than near-field monitors.

Lespaul. From what I have heard on both side, I think I would prefer monitors. I am pretty critical of my records and music. I like it in the right location on the soundstage and very transient with a little less upper midbass than most and slightly rolled off highs

I would suggest you visit Audio Alternative or Audio Atlanta (they are in the Atlanta area) both stores carry a good selection of products at all price levels. Be honest about your budget and what you are looking for in a system. You have a substantial amount to work with and they can assemble a system for you to audition.

Also I am really not a fan of apple nor am I a fan of mp3s and with their kind of advertising it could really turn someone off of them
