View Full Version : A Tape Test
I once heard there was a guy that could look at any mastering tape and tell what kind it was and the manufacturer.
Let's play.
First tape.

Assuming the tape is on its original reel, that's 3M 996.

Is that a 10.5" diameter half-inch reel?
The only tapes I can recognize are the ones from Quantegy. GP9 comes on red reels and 456 and 499 on white reels.

Wow.:righton:
The yellow reel gives it away. 996 was the only tape to come on yellow reels.
However, it could be a different tape spooled on that reel.

I used to be able to identify various types of tape manufactured by 3M and Maxell by smell alone! Not so sure I'd be able to nowadays.

I can do that!! They all have a distinct and unique smell. That is generally how I identify unmarked tape.

?
The machine is a Tascam 30 series. The reel looks like a generic reel.

Steve's looks like Ampex 456, from what I can remember.
The Sput reel looks like the one they give you with the Tascam machine, when you buy it new.
