On my Marantz 2230 thread, Rolf listed some of his FOC items that are currently in use. He mentioned this because my Marantz was a FOC item.

The computer that my son uses with his touchscreen (Compaq Athlon 1.8 gig w/512 pc 2100 and a 40 g hd) was another of my curb shopping finds. It had a virus (presumably, it was erratic at any rate). I wiped the drive, did a clean install of XP, and it has run great for almost two years now.

What is your best curb or dumpster find?

I found a nice Xerox machine in Old Town Alexandria a couple years ago. The "start" button sticks like crazy - that's why they dumped it - but it works great otherwise. I don't use it much, but there's something really cool about having my own Xerox machine! :D

Found a working Peavey guitar amp and a bunch of nice
(very expensive )guitar cords. What a find, just sitting out
next to a dumpster. I have a feeling a girlfriend got pissed
and decided to get even.Who knows ?

I found Shane MacGowan's old Fender Twin in a cupboard in a flat he had been the previous tennant in.
A friend checked it out and one of the big ceramic resistors had come off the board - presumably due to a heavy knock. He re-soldered the resistor and hey presto - a fully working Fender amp!

I sold it a couple of years later - someone out there has Shane's old Fender amp and doens't have a clue :)

Also found an ARP AXE on the street with a note that said "Free to a good home" - swapped it for a friend's bass guitar

Picked up an excellent condition Marantz 2252b receiver on the curb a few years back. I gave this wonderful sounding receiver a good home and it's been living with me ever since.

A guy in my neighborhood in Phoenix gave me a 72 Camaro that was in pretty good shape that his kid had semi trashed. I passed it on to my best freind who really needed a car!

My buddy Brian found a Marantz 10B tuner at a yard sale for 10 bucks (in my old neighborhood!) Later on in the month he sold it for $2,500.00.

2 years ago, I was cleaning up my yard (it was beginning to look like a dumpster) and found a $100 bill in some leaves. 3 days later I found a $10 bill about 20' from where I found the $100. I live at the end of a cul-de-sac and the wind blows everything down to my end of the circle. At least this time it was money instead of leaves and trash.

So, apparently, you have that tree that money grows on.

Several years ago someone down the street threw out boxes of records. I can't remember now what was in there exactly as a lot of it has been integrated into the rest of my records, but one was a NM colored steamboat Axis Bold As Love. I've found a lot of decent receivers and speakers and things too. No Marantz 10Bs yet though.

What model is it? I was a Xerox tech for many years, back in the day. Those usually can be un-stuck, depending on the machine.:agree:

BZZZ! That's not a "curb or dumpster find" - it's a yard sale find!!!

Ok.. non-musical.

When I was a kid we use to go "junkin' " not "jukin' " but "junkin' " .

Familiar?

Well, basically its going down the allies as pre-teens and raiding the dumpsters all over town for something cool. Gross yeah... lol but as a poor kid it was pretty fun and actually productive at times.

Our big find? A huge sealed box of Lays Potato chips that must have been 7 feet tall and contained brand new bags of chips. Probably 50 or so bags.We took them home to our club house and hid them under the floor ( mom would have made us throw them away).

We ate chips for the whole summer. And we all know what goes good with Lays chips and "Tales of Brave Ulysses"... riiight? ;)

We also once found a great couch for the hangout. We wore the wheels to metal trying to haul that sucker back about 2 or 3 miles in our little red wagon we would take.

.. but nothing topped the great "Lays" find :)

Not the most valuable find on a curb, but the coolest lucky find I had at a particular point in time, was when I was 14 and an entire crew was being changed on a Norwegian ship. The old crew had all flown home upon arriving in the US, and the new crew was a week away, so two Chinese stewards who remained on board had to prepare the cabins for the new crew. Rather than being in their way, I was actually helping them in my scavenging through the cabins and hauling out Playboys (and the Norwegian equivalent "Cocktail") along with knives, foreign coins & currency, souveniers, bottle openers, soft drinks from around the world, stationery, matches, postcards, ship models, decks of cards, stamps, condoms, clothing, transistor radios, records, all kinds of stuff.

Sunday night is "Trash-Night" in Hermosa Beach. Time for trash huntin'. I have found repairable, a 5 DVD multi player, a single DVD player, about 5 CRT computer monitors, 2 Air Conditioners, 6 microwaves, 5 fans, Treadmill, Mini-cooper front bucket-seat unused, Slalom water-ski, 2 pair of snow-skis, Wet-suit, Magnetic sign, Sheets of clear heavy plexiglass, floor polishing machine, 5 vacuums, etc.. Off I go..!

I found a desk lamp (the articulated, architects type) that belonged to a friend of mine in a dumpster once. I'm still using it.

I know this doesn't count, but the best find I've ever had on the cheap was my Marantz 2270 receiver for $20. I'm looking for an MC275 though - so I'm checking all dumpsters! :D

My best find in recent times was last year, when I found a pair of Pioneer HPM-60 speakers (from the late 70s). They needed a bit of work on the woofers and pots, but once fixed, they sound totally awesome. In fact, once I heard them, I ended up selling off my "so-called" better speakers which these now replaced (simply because the Pioneers actually sound better). ....Oh, and as for non-audio related (since everyone else here is getting their two cents in), I found a Schwinn Twinn tandem bicycle frame in a dumpster in the mid-90s (power equipment place going out of business) and acquired another Schwinn tandem frame last year (welded them together, and repainted/customized it into a bicycle built for three).....
