Out of all my DVDs I have 5 movies. The rest are music. There aren't too many movies I'd watch over and over, but music's a different matter.

My favorite DVD (and movie) is Pink Floyd's The Wall. My favorite concert DVD is Dream Theater's "Metropolis 2000-Live Scenes from New York" followed closely by Spock's Beard's "Dont Try This at Home". Here are the others:

The Black Sabbath Story vols. 1 and 2
Cream Farewell Concert
Fates Warning Live at the Dynamo
David Gilmour in Concert
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock, Band of Gypsys, Live at the Isle of Wight, Wild Blue Angel
Iron Maiden - Raising Hell (quality sucks - stay away)
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same
Ozric Tentacles Live at the Pongmaster's Ball
RATM - The Battle of Mexico City
Rush - Chronicles
Joe Satriani Live in San Francisco
The Smashing Pumpkins - Viewphoria
U2 Live form Boston
Stevie Ray Vaughan -Live at the El Mocambo, Live from Austin Texas
Roger Waters - In the Flesh
Yes - Keys to Ascension

I've also got an Armored Saint and another Fates Warning on the way.

So...whatchu got?

Beach Boys - Endless Harmony (excellent 5.1 surround sound bonus track mixes. I particularly like "Sail On Sailor".)
Beatles - AHDN - recent 5.1 fiasco
Beatles - Yellow Sub
Rutles - All You Need Is Cash
Band - The Last Waltz
Diana Krall - Live In Paris
Midnight Oil - 20000 Watts R.S.L. - The Midnight Oil Collection
contains all the videos remastered and some good live concert footage as well
This Is Spinal Tap
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Rolling Stones - recent L.A. benefit concert :D
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
U2 - Elevation 2001 - Live In Boston

Guys And Dolls - Does that count? It's a musical. It's Frank. It's remastered in wide screen with the musical numbers in surround sound.

BTW, Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap)'s new music mockumentary movie is finished. It is based on the other parody musical group that Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer have, "The Folksmen". Anybody remember their skit in 1985 on SNL? It was hilarious. I can't wait to see the movie. Oh, it's called "The Mighty Wind", scheduled for release this spring.

Here is an encyclopedic entry from a Spinal Tap fan Web site.

Folksmen, The: Aging folk band reminiscent of the Kingston Trio that was scheduled to open for Spinal Tap during the 1992 Royal Albert Hall show. Instead, they played a nearby Tube stop for change because roadies feared the energetic heavy metal crowd would tear them to pieces. Four years later, according to the Tap Web page, the group signed a four-month lease on a 1994 Chrysler minivan in anticipation of Tap’s never-realized 1996 Third World Tour. Rumor had it the trio might put out a CD. From the Web page: "Perhaps best known, if at all, for their 1962 Top 70 hit ‘Old Joe’s Place,’ the Folksmen have earned a lasting place in folk music history as the group too popular to be purist and too purist to be popular. Jerry Palter, Alan Barrows and Mark Shubb met as freshmen at Ohio Wesleyan and over the next 26 months played and sang their own brand of ‘eclectified folk’ music. Recently reunited after more than two decades, they are again becoming a popular late addition to folk festivals within a day’s auto travel of their homes."

Michael McKean plays Jerry Palter.
Christopher Guest is Allan Barrows.
Harry Shearer is Mark Shubb.

Hey Rick:
I'm coming over to your house to watch some DVD's man! That's some collection. Say: Do you love that Jeff Buckley "Live In Chicago" as much as I do? I have played that for a number of people who have never heard of him and their jaws always drop. Such a shame about him. What a talent.

Peace
Norm

Not many on DVD--but plenty on Laser.

DVD is limited to:

Metallica--S&M
Ozzy--Live and Loud
Classic Albums: U2/Joshua Tree
Classic Albums: Phil Collins/Face Value
Classic Albums: Steely Dan/Aja
Classic Albums: The Who/Who's Next
Steely Dan: Two Against Nature (from the TV concert)

I don't get into the live concert videos as much as I used to. I'm more into biographies these days.

Will have to get my Laser list up here one of these days. Hey, I even have that Olivia Newton-John LD from "Physical". Need my eye candy. :D I have a few of those 8" LDs, and I even have one of those "video single" video CDs that has Donald Fagen's "New Frontier" on the laserdisc track.

Regards,
Ken, I thought Echo Live In Liverpool was only a U.K. release, region 2. One of my DVD players is all-regions so it's not issue for me. BTW, how is it? I love the CD.

Looking at Ken's list I forgot to mention that I also have the Neil Finn - 7 Worlds DVD. Also my Spinal Tap is the recent issue, not the Criterion.

The "Live in Liverpool" DVD is OK (I believe mine is NTSC Region 0), but the DD 5.1 track is defective. I started a thread on it over at the music forum right here (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10587).

Norm,

Come over anytime man! :) But you should see my regular movie DVD collection, somewhere in the neighboorhood of 430-450 or so.

I totally dig that Jeff Buckley DVD. If anyone doesn't have it yet, grab it. Wonderful stuff. Talk about someone who passed before their time. It seems that ran in the family. What a shame. :(

Oh, I also forgot to mention:

Tourfilm - R.E.M.

and on Laserdisc;

Rattle and Hum - U2
Live at the Uptown Lounge - Indigo Girls
Things That go Pump in the Night - Aerosmith

Beatlelennon65,

Unfortunately, I haven't watched the Elevation DVD all the way through yet so can't give a comprehensive review.

However I can vouch for the Tom Petty DVD. Picture quality is so-so but sound is first rate. Thsi was taped during one of Tom Petty's innumerable shows at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium and he's at the top of his game (so are the Heartbreakers). If your a Tom Petty fan a ,must have for your collection.

Side note, you might really like Neil Young's Silver & Gold DVD as well. The sound and picture on that one are both top notch.

Man, you guys are giving me some good ideas of what to get next!

Beatlelennon65,
All of the Hendrix DVDs leave a little to be desired from a visual quality viewpoint, especially "Band of Gypsys", but that one is musically my favorite. I love them all, though. I think Jimi earned his guitar god title.

The Satriani disc is very good both sonically and visually. Satch puts on a great show. If you're in any way a fan already, you won't be disappointed with it.

I only have the following on DVD:

Deep Purple "Total Abandon"
Hawkwind "Night of the Hawks"
Hawkwind "The Chronicle of the Black Sword"
James Taylor "Live At The Beacon Theatre"
Jethro Tull "Living with the Past"
King Crimson deja VROOM
Metallica S & M
Queensryche "Operation:LIVEcrime"
The Wall (Pink Floyd)

I like them all, but my favorite might be the Deep Purple disc. Steve Morse is great with Deep Purple. I have always been a fan of Deep Purple and Steve Morse (hey, I even like the 2 albums he did with Kansas), but I never would have thought that they would work so well together.

Aaaaargh! Why do I find these threads so late at night! It would be so easy just to say "I've got every video" and let it go at that, but then my nose would grow faster than Michael Jackson's after a visit to his plastic surgeon!

Okay, I'm just going to list my faves and the rarities, okay?

Here goes (DVD, no particular order of preference; I like them all, but see subjective star ratings for rankings based on exceptional performances, historical value and/or quality):

Jimi Hendrix: Blue Wild Angel [****1/4], Live at Woodstock [****1/2], Band of Gypsies, Experience, and the documentary film Jimi Hendrix
Cream: Fresh Live Cream [***3/4]
The Who: Live at the Isle of Wight [****1/2]

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Freebird the Movie plus... [****1/4]
Uriah Heep: The Legend Continues [***], Sailing the Sea of Light, Magician's Birthday Party [****]

Yes: Symphonic (WS, anamorphic) [***3/4]
Metallica: S&M [***1/2]
Billy Squire: Live in the Dark [***1/2]
Pat Benatar: Live [***1/2]

On Laserdisc (again, no particular order of preference, but see subjective star ratings for exceptional performances and/or quality):

Free: Deidicated to the Memory of Paul Kosoff (Japanese import) [****1/4]
Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Atlanta Pop Festival (Japanese import) [****1/2], Jimi Plays Berkley [****]
Cream: Farewell Concert (complete 83 min. performance, Japanese import) [***1/2]

Grand Funk Railroad: The American Band (Japanese import) [***1/2]
Deep Purple: Machine Head Live (Japanese import of Danish concert)

You'll notice that there's not a large difference between "star" ratings because I like all of these discs, and a number not listed which have eluded my memory for the moment, but what I've done is provide incremental nudges up the scale based on several criterion: 1) historical importance, 2) quality of the performances and 3) quality of the transfer to disc (i.e, including whether the release was shot WS and released in anamorphic mode in order to be enhanced for WS televisions).

In all candor, I actually *hate* getting so analytical about rock & roll, which should be FUN, but I knew that in order to provide useful information which others might benefit from I'd need to get a little "anal" about it. Hey, if you ever meet meet me, just don't expect a stiff necked nerd, cuz you'll be real diasappointed my fellow dudes & dudesses!

Anyway, I hope that this stuff is useful; now it's way past time for me to get some shut-eye. :o Note: This icon is supposed to be "embarassment" but I think it's more reflective of how tired I am at the moment! 'Til tomorrow...

Ciao,
Cat

A lot of good collections here .... I've got over 100 myself (a cross-section of many of the titles listed in the thread). My two "prized" titles are A Hard Day's Night (MPI) (out of print, only paid about $22 CDN new for it from the store) and Gimme Shelter (Criterion) (pristine print, great sound in DTS and really good extras).

I noticed some people have listed a few titles on DVD-R. I bought a DVD recorder last year (uses DVD+RW and DVD+R, plays back every format) and have been transferring a lot of my old tapes over the years. I recently transferred Live Aid (original 1985 mono). Thankfully, everything I taped post-1989 is in stereo. I've also transferred video-only (likely never on DVD) titles such as "The Compleat Beatles" (not that great when compared to Anthology but still good IMO). Do many of you tape performances off of shows like SNL, Letterman and Leno?? Again, great one-off performances that may not be repeated on TV again (though SNL is re-run quite a bit on Comedy Central). The Paul Simon-George Harrison performance from 1976 is re-run quite a bit.

DirecTV also has good free concerts (they've got Rush from 1989 this month). And Trio has a few too (thanks to whoever reminded us about the Elton John concert a couple of weeks ago).

Hope I haven't crossed any lines here about "home taping". OK, gotta go save up for Anthology. And perhaps Let It Be by the end of the year??

I've re-read my post and I hope it doesn't look like a "trade request" type post (I barely have enough time to tape my own stuff!!). I just want to know if people collect these other "impossible to buy" performances (which just involve switching on the TV and popping in a tape, as opposed to waiting for that elusive release date - like we've done for Anthology).

An interesting one I picked up recently is Bjork's Greatest Hits. It's about an hour long and contains a nice selection of her videos. It's in a normal jewel case with a sticker on the front and is promo-only. Found it at a used CD outlet for $6.99 and it seems to be trading on eBay in the $50-$60 range.
