View Full Version : What do your neighbors think of your hifi?
I'm curious what members' neighbors think about our audio hobby?
Do they like the sound?
Do they think you spent too much money?
in the neighborhood start to dim because of the excessive current the stereo draws. Actually, I have never had a complaint other than once I was playing it a bit loud during Yom Kippur and they asked me to turn it down, but that was way back when I lived in an apartment complex.

No compliants, but I use restraint and watch the hours I play it carefully.

Who cares? I didn't build the system for them. :p
I've shown a couple of my neighbors my systems; they act impressed but as many noted in a similar thread, most folk's aural tastebuds have been destroyed by Bose, boom boxes, HTIAB, iPod's etc. Their loss, eh?

I once had an upstairs neighbor stomp on his floor, my ceiling, due to an early morning Coolio serenade. Gangsta's Paradise, I believe it was. Other than that, no complaints, and I haven't had any of them actually come over to listen.

before building my house i took into account the way my neighbor's houses faced, where there doors were, where there windows were, etc.... and i made sure that all my doors and windows did not coincide with theirs.

The people on the other side of my backyard wall put in a spa against the wall as far away from there house and as close to my house as they could. Party until 2am with very cheap speakers full blast at my house and i've never said a word about it. Now someone has been calling the cops at midnight to complain and he told be that sucks like i did it. He also warned me the next time i play BSS and he can hear that bass he'll be calling. I said you havent heard any bass yet but the first time you call you'll get the full treatment and you'll beg that the cops dont come back so go ahead and call. We'll see as i've put up with that crap for 2 years now and have never said a word.

my neighbor installs home theater systems and he thinks I am totally nuts. Although he once called to borrow my SPL meter. He needed one and was sure I would have one laying around.

Now I see it ain't necessarily so.
I don't play my stereo so loud my neighbors can hear it.

My closest neighbor is several hundred yards away so there's never an issue with that. But the deer seem to like it (except when I crank up the Pizzacato Five). :)
I get a few "oohs and ahhs" when friends come over.

In my former home, I trained my neighbors (apartment building) to accept music at high volume since day one and it worked.
Received once, though, a comment about the "strange" music I play (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons).

I have one house that is fairly close to mine, so I try to be nice. Although I do it play it pretty loud most of the time. I just make sure I tone it down by 10. My wife suggested that I ask them if my stereo's too loud. I told her no way. Why solicit a complaint?

I must have good sound baffling in my basement. I live in a condo with 3 other units attached. I play real loud in my basement as late as 3:00 AM and no one ever complains. It's barely audible when I'm outside. Only once did the neighbor complain when I was doing mixing in my studio on the 2nd floor bedroom and that was about 2:00 AM. I don't like to sleep.

Exactly! I doubt my neighbours would enjoy talking about hi-fi over tea and crumpits either. Like Geoff, I like to keep what I own private. They'd think I'm nuts if they really knew what I had crammed into my 1,100 square foot condo. Now that I think of it, I am nuts. Why advertise it?
