Remote problems (Toshiba SE-R0066)

So the other day I went to use the remote for my DVD/VCR combo unit (a Toshiba SD V280) and it didn't work. Tried replacing the batteries, so forth and so on. Still didn't work
Okay, I thought, maybe the remote's got a short in it, I think I'll get a new one.
Spent a little less than $25 on a new remote, just put NEW batteries into it, and it STILL doesn't work.

So what now? Do I need to (re?)set the remote to work with the DVD/VCR unit, or is it the receiver inside the unit that's broken, or what?

The unit works fine when I press the buttons on the front, and I've had absolutely no prolem with it except for the failed remote.

Tell me about it. Recently the channel-selection buttons on the remote to my 10-year-old Sharp VCR stopped working. Out of the blue. Changing the batteries made no difference.

I find it annoying how many electronics products of the last 15-20 years have functions on the remote control that are not duplicated on the unit itself: If you lose the remote, you lose functionality.
