Vinyl with a lot of surface noise can certainly sound bad, but IS it bad, ........ for the stylus or cartridge, that is?
I'm not talking about stuff that has a few pops & clicks here & there, but the kind of stuff that has an almost constant background of Rice Krispies going on in the background, but is still relatively listenable. Any thoughts?

Interesting.
All I can contribute is when I bought my first "decent" 'table (Linn Axis with K9 cart), the dealer gave me a small square of fine sandpaper to use as a tip cleaner. Well, I looked at him like he had two heads. He responded by saying that the tip was a diamond and the fine-grit paper would be the best thing to use to clean the stylus.
I said "makes sense to me" and then promptly never used it.
I don't believe clicks and pops will harm a cart. Gashes and warps are another story.
