Well, speakers to be exact. I'll be getting a new system next year and don't know where to start.

My fav speakers were always the JBL Century L100s (I went through three sets of bass drivers before giving them away). I also had the L200s (briefly), DCM Time Windows, and an early M&K satelite system. I've been led to believe that the 70's JBL sound is passe, obsolescent, dum-bass etc.

Any suggestions? My budget for speakers is $1300, give or take a couple.

Have you thought about DIY?

Also, to be more help, I would suggest you ask this question at www.audioasylum.com (http://www.audioasylum.com) (speakers section). Let them know your music tastes, your "now" equipment, what speakers you've liked in the past (you've mentioned) and don't forget your amp/preamp chain mention.

Me, I would say go DIY but I just picked up a pair of Electrostatc Acoustat's for free. 58" X 28". These sound absolutely phenominal, but they're very large:

I also bought a Hefler 225w amp. These get thirsty for current. I'm runnning a measley 35w through them. We'll see what happens when I put 175/ea @4 oHms.

Sounds like a piano is in my living room! ;)

Keep on listening!

The suggestion of going to the speaker section at audioasylum.com is a good one.

Listening to as many speakers as you can is another.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Thiel, Mirage, Paradigm, and B&W.

http://www.wright-sound.com/light_anim.gif I'm on a mission from God.

Actually Patrick Moss was a big help in finding the ad so quickly, that I was the 1st person to respond. The man told me the speakers were Acoustat 1+1's but they're really model 3's WITH the Medialion upgrade and monster cable. In short, they're actually worth some money!

Downfall is, the Dynaco's aren't enough, and high powered tube amps are very expensive. So, for stability and power (along with honest sound and designer-related solutions) I picked up a Hafler amp H-225. One of the Dynaco's will go down in the basement which I am furnishing. I'll get a Bottlehead Foreplay and throw on a CD player I fixed for $2, a Knight vintage FM/AM tuner ($9), and my older high-efficiancies.

DIY is very liberating. I'm very lucky, and many thanks to Patrick Moss for being such a good LD buddy!
