Has anyone heard this unit.

Great WAF. Does the sound follow through? Would look great in a Mac stack too.

What's the world coming to? CDPs that look like they fell off the back of a flying saucer but have tubes?

;) ;)

FWIW, I've got the comparably priced Shanling T200 (which does SACD as well), and it's quickly become my digital player of choice (the Bendix 6385 tube upgrade helped a lot). I'm using it with a Mcintosh C20/MC-30 setup.

But it looks like the T1500 changes the Burr-Brown chip from a 1738 to a 1794 and the tubes from 6N3 to 6922, so it may sound completely different.

The look is very Jetsons. I guess the WAF factor was ok; mine just burst out laughing when she first saw it.

Hence the proverb "Too much blue light kills."

My wife: "I would NEVER allow this in my living room!" so much for the WAF...

So I take it no one has actually heard this.

I'd love to hear that flying-saucer one; unfortunately I don't think anyone round here stocks Shanling.

Reviews I've read suggest that the Shanling CD kit is smooth, with good instrumental timbre and ambience retrieval. Not PRaT machines like Naim or Rega, though.

I just discovered this company via a news item in my local paper:
http://www.community-newspapers.com/campbell/business1.shtml
http://www.audiblearts.com

Here a list of all of Shanling products:

The SCD-T2000 Tube SACD/CD Player that was mentioned here earlier in this thread looks pretty sweet:
http://www.shanling.com/English/SCD-T2000.htm

Too bad it doesn't do DVD-A. If it does have DTS decoding, I could live with that! More importantly, is this SACD player two-channel or multichannel?

Also wondering if there are other tube SACD players on the market besides the Shanling.

Shanling are strictly 2-ch CD/HDCD/SACD

Shanling has made some headway in the US high-end audio market. I bet the profit margins to the dealers must be obscene since this is a 100% Chinese brand.

I've seen these up close. I guess I like the typical box type enclosure.

This one's mine. It is also Chinese made.

Bummer. Are there any other players on the market that do SACD multichannel DVD-A and DTS that have integrated tubes?

Yes. Buy a stock Denon 2900 or 3910 universal player and then send it over to ModWright. Dan Wright will fix you up with tubes galore.

He'll mod your 2900 for $1600:

He'll mod your 3910 for $2500, or sell you an already modded unit for $4000:

Maybe Dan will send you some. Some modders don't want to post pictures of their mods, others don't care. Don't know where Dan stands on this, but his mods are widely recognized as some of the very best in the business.

Dan's mods are great, but I don't believe he does a multichannel tube mod; strictly 2ch.

I think he'll do it for more $$$. I seem to recall--maybe reading on Underwood HiFi's website--that multichannel tube mods were an option. That might have been a Parts Connexion mod, though. Check out www.underwoodhifi.com for more details.

EDIT:

Yes, multichannel tube mods are available at Underwood HiFi. Not sure if it is the PartsConnexion mod or the ModWright mod, but nevertheless it sure looks interesting. Look towards the middle of the page, for the Denon 5910 mod with steps A,B,C, and D. At the end, there are additional prices for a center channel mod, and a mod on the four additional channels (for a total of 6 channels modded).

I'll have to read more on your edit.

A review of the Shanniling mod is here. Still looks like 2-channel only, though:

http://www.underwoodhifi.com/6moonst100.html

Still, an expensive hobby. I'm on hold. Surely, there has to be a tube SACD/DVD-A player out there already built! If not now, maybe in the future.

It looks like Underwood only adds the tube stage to the front left and right, though you can do non-tube mods to the other channels at the same time.

There would appear to be two constraints on developing multichannel tube stages: finding enough space in the chassis and the enormous heat that would be generated.

The options specify that the level-2 mod can be done to the other channels. I guess that isn't the tube mod. Oh well.

Besides that, the mods are pricey!
