This is one strange move - and in LA no less.

--
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Woody Allen has shocked fans with the announcement he is to direct an opera in California. Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, general director of the Los Angeles opera, has invited Allen to direct an epic in September 2008. Allen says, "I have no idea what I am doing. But incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in with enthusiasm." Allen will direct Gianni Schicchi, part of Puccini's Il Trittico opera trio.

well he loves opera...and I loved the use of it in Matchpoint. He's certainly directed enough films. I bet its a huge success, it will certainly be a "hot ticket" I would imagine.

Lets face it, its a smart move to bring in a non opera crowd as well. Something all significant opera houses are trying to do these days.

If this was in NY, I'd go see it. I try to go to 1 opera a year. The ones at the Met in NY are such great productions, with subtitles, its always a great experience.

I certainly will not rush out to buy that CD set if that performance is ever recorded live.
