Jack Finney's 1955 novel "INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS" ('The Body Snatchers') is certainly a popular movie subject - having been made again and again - the latest with Nicole Kidman, set for release on August 17th.
But for us fans of Philip Kaufman's 1978 version with Donald Sutherland, Leonard Nimoy, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright and Brooke Adams, a two-disc "Collector's Edition" is scheduled for release on August 7th.
Although the current single-disc release isn't bad (see AllMovieGuide comments below), I'm looking forward to and hoping for an upgrade with many extras.
"The film print doesn't look like it has been restored for this release (and it needs to be), but it's great to have this terrifying movie back in wide screen, and the disc's extras are much better than average. The DVD presents the film in a widescreen transfer and it also comes with in a pan-and-scan version on the flip side. There's nothing wrongs with the transfer, but the source print hasn't been restored and it shows plenty of wear and tear."

I saw it at the movies and it was a fantastic remake.
I'll have to check out this re-release on DVD.

Cool...I remember seeing this in the theatre as well, and it was fun and spooky...plus it had two seconds of nudity, always a thrill for a teenager. :D

I rarely agree with Allmovieguide on a lot of films (seems they have the same issues as Allmusicguide) but I would agree with the assessment of the print used for the DVD. It isn't so much that it hasn't been restored as the print used as the source isn't very good but would disagree about the transfer. It's a so-so transfe.

Jerry Garcia appears briefly in the movie playing a banjo in a park.

I never knew this before. Thanks for the tidbit!
I'm sure everyone already knows about Robert Duvall's cameo.

Although "Invasion" is credited to the Jack Finney novel, like its predecessors, it updates location and storyline. In fact, when the rough cut was ready, it was decided to shoot more action sequences to create a more likely summer action blockbuster than the thoughtful, "talky" original cut. Nicole Kidman was injured in the filming of one new action sequence. Interestingly, no version of the Jack Finney "Body Snatcher's" actually used his ending.
Here's a updated/revised film credits, I found:
THE INVASION
August 17
(Warner Bros. Pictures / Village Roadshow Pictures)
Director: Original - Oliver Hirschbiegel
Reshoot - James Mcteigue
Writers: Original Screenplay by David Kajganich
Rewrite - The Wachowski Brothers
Now back to my original thread topic, the 1978 version.
I would like to see a DVD from pristine restored elements, behind the scenes, deleted scenes, storyboards, the making of and commentary by cast and Director - sort of like the excellent John Carpenter's "The Thing" DVD release.

I am looking forward to it!
You might also be interested in the 70's Sci-Fi Appreciation Thread, and if this thread drifts to discuss films and television beyond the 2-DVD Invasion release, I encourage you to post there instead. Heck, I encourage you to post there to discuss Invasion of the Body Snatchers--it's been briefly discussed already:
