View Full Version : Rotel Owners - can you play CD-RW discs?

I have three CD-RW discs I use mainly for checking out sound quality of mp3s , then erasing. On the Rotel 1072, one of the discs works, the other two do not. I get a reading of "No Disc". I emailed Rotel, and a tech said the 1072 only supports R, not RW. I emailed back saying that I have one that does work. He seemed surprised, said it was either a fluke or recorded at a slower speed. All the discs have a max record speed of 4X, and I can go no lower. Comments? Dennis

CD-RW discs are a crapshoot for audio applications because they are magnitudes of order worse reflectors than a CD-R. The data is exactly the same on both discs, it's just a matter of how much more difficult it is to read off of a CD-RW. Most players struggle with the RW. That's not to say that they can't read it or that you don't have a particularly good RW disc that your player agrees with... it just means that usually it will be too hard and won't work.
The whole 'record it slower and it'll be a better burn' philosophy is an urban legend left over from when computers could barely keep up with an 8x burn speed and would make errors. It's simply not a factor in anything anymore.

Interesting - I never had a playback problem with these when I used less expensive CD players.

Yes. Quite a few players dont like them.
Anybody else have problems using CD-RW?
I don't have a Rotel, but CD-RWs don't play in my Sony SCD-1, nor in my Honda factory car CD player.
I have a Rotel 971 and have no problems with Cd-RW's.
