Someone posted a ? to me regarding at home quad. I post it here for all to read:

Hi Sckott,

I purchased the Abbey Road Japan CD-R from you a few months ago (great sound, so open and uncompressed) and I read your posts on the DCC chat board with great interest.

Since it seems that you are a very knowledgeable fellow, I thought I'd pose the following question to you - actually a couple of questions :-)

My friend recently acquired a Quadraphonic 8-track player for his car. I've been searching eBay for him to get some cool 8-track tapes and I began to think I'd like to jump into the fray and buy a home Quad 8-track player. I'd love to hear 4 discrete channels so I'm just sticking to 8-track and don't plan on getting into LPs with SQ or Shibata stylus or any other decoding schemes - I really don't want to buy a Quad receiver if I can help it.

The question is, can I play these tapes through a Dolby Digital receiver? And beyond that, can I record these tapes in 4 channel through my sound card onto my computer? I have Cool Edit Pro and wondered if the multitrack recorder would work. And then (I'm not asking too much am I) could I record CD-Rs that play back through the computer in 4 channel sound with the original discrete 4 channel mix?

P.S, I have a computer DVD Video player (no DVD-audio player yet) and I don't have DTS, if that helps you.

Thanks in advance.

Hoo boy. Should I tell you?? Should I widen your latitude?? May I blow yer mind??

First of all, a lot of Q8’s were recorded very well. Actually, ones made in the UK fair better, like DSOTM. What people are doing now with Q8’s are at-home mastering to DTS. You might see some Q8’s on ebay with the splice replaced, stuck to the corner of the cart. This is the collector’s way of saying, I’ve unspooled it, now it’s your turn to baby it. The only real way to enjoy a Q8 is to unspool it to a modified Ampex (or whichever) deck with the modified heads, run at 3 ¾ IPS. Those carts are now a collector’s joy, the better being handled by at-home Steve Hoffmans who use refurbed old equipment to master 4track discreet to CDR by means of DTS encode/decode.

Here’s a link you should look at: http://hometown.aol.com/matrixquad/about.htm

Read it good. This man is nothing short to genius. Women should flock to him and get him well-laid.

The best recording’s I’ve heard are 7 ½ IPS open reels, Quad. I’m telling you, Moody Blues “Threshold Of A Dream” in DTS from 4 channel will make you wet yourself.

The pro is, with a little bit of money, you can get the DTS authoring software and the sound card to record 4 channel. You will basically be making a DTS encoded CDR, but (here’s the con) you can only play them back with DTS equipment, more in the range of a CD player with optical out, and a DTS receiver with optical in. My Rotel does this, 4 channel using a Sony optical out-CD player (not expensive) to the Rotel by Optical (ONLY!!!) then to the 2 Dynaco ST70’s. Poof. There’s yer Quad.

Soak in that webpage good. I could type all day about it, but that man has it down pat. I’ve heard his stuff, lots! My advice? Don’t try it yourself, but get DTS, a few of his CDs and enjoy it with less sweat. I have a few of them. Why collect Q8’s and quads…there’s a lot of hassles and bad ebay trades involved. A lot of sick, dedicated collecting goes into his work. It's cheaper to hunt down a reciever that does DTS, and either get his CDRs' or DTS commerical CDs, get your quad playback chain... Cuz Messing with old equipment, eBay, your computer, an Audigy sound card (or better) Cool Edit, DTS authoring, Hard Drive space management..ARRRGH! Hey, I've made DTS Cds! They're a whoopin' pain in the kiester! What good is it if you can only play it on your PC?!?

Also, Quad Reels go for good money now. It’s not just collectors, but at-home DTS masterers and fanatics. There’s a reason for it. A lot of them sound fairly impressive and are worth the wait. Take a look at ebay closely knowing these facts. Again, don’t bother trying to master these well at home. It’s been done. Reap the benefits.

Added: I have 8-9 DTS I've listened to made Cds from a DCCer who shall go nameless to protect his free time. Noting that most of you might not have DTS capabilities, making dupes for curious people might not work. YA NEED THE DTS playabck chain done right, ya know! Explore and enjoy.
