I have a chance to purchase these from a local seller. From what I've read, they seem like a really good buy. Anyone have any experience with these?

Thank you,

Robert Mills

Robert,

Unfortunately I have no experience with them, but I have heard a lot about them. All nice things, BTW.

You can get a general idea if you take some time to read owner´s reviews here:

Just wonder who has taken over the rights to the name Dynaco these days. The last I heard it was owned by some Malaysian company. This is no longer the real thing like it was 40 years ago.

Hey Robert,

I have a pair (one tweet is blown) of A-25XL. They're great little speakers. I guess it depends on how much you're paying for them?

A speaker that is tonally similar to the old Dynaco's are a brand named "Grafyx" which were made in Illinois. They have the same qualities as the Dyn's but do it better. Don't here much about them, but if you like the Dyn's you'll love the Grafyx (they had several models).

Here's a good site on Dynaco speakers:

I had the A-25's and A-35's back in the 70's. The grille cloth was the ugliest colour possible. I changed mine to red with some black threads mixed in. The 25's had a very neutral sound for those days when so speakers were bright. Did you ask if the speakers have replacement drivers or surrounds? I liked the 35's better. They had a bigger enclosure and lost the port. They used the same drivers but had a bit bigger sound and maybe a tad more bass.

40 watts will make 25's or 35's sing quite well. It's so long ago, that's about all I remember.....

Most of them used a similar color scheme:

Pictured are Dynaco, Advent, and KLH.

I heard a pair about 15 years ago, not sure of the model # but they looked like these and had a port. A friend brought them over. I'll tell you, one can do a whole lot worse. Those speakers sounded very good with acoustic music and vocals, very natural. I don't think they would be to good for heavy metal though.;)

I would of changed the grill cloths on any of those! Advents were on my radar and I do recall they offered black grill cloth by the time I considered them.

I had my 25's for about 3 months before I changed the grillcloth and I did it the moment I got home with the 35's. I had quad with my four Dynacos sor a year and then had Dynaco's integrated SQ-80 with Matrix surround after I dumped the Quad reciever. Eventually, I sold the 25's. The four speaker stuff was too bulky when I went away to kollege. I kept the four for a few years and played with the matrix more in the summers. My fav thing to matrix or do in quad while I had it was Firesign Theatre's Everything You Know Is Wrong or how I became a special person in 35 minutes....

I went down to Radio Shack and bought a roll of purr-dy red grillcloth. It was the stylish thing to do. You'd be suprised how many folks liked, or thought I had a deee-luxe edition, or made favourable comments. BTW, I glued the little Dynaco nameplates back on it the exact same location.

Actually, I helped a friend do his advents in black. I may have inspired some other folks...?

As far as 25's not doing heavy metal well, they do it fine but you can't play them as loud as bigger speakers. For attempted deafness, well, heavy med-al, back in the 70's....some folks got stuff like Cerwin Vega which sounded WAY bright to me.

My little brother asked my advice on speakers and I told him to go with Advent or Dynaco. He bought some very bright sounding BIC jobbies. He's no audiophile and even he came to hate them. Somethin' broke on one and he got Advents. The dealer that did Dynaco shut down. He wanted Dynaco 35's and was toying with the idea of 50's that neither of us ever heard. The before mentioned dealer never stocked the 50's. I've stille never heard or even seen a pair. Has anybody 'round these parts?

Bright speakers were quite popular for rockers in the 70's, I thought. Or, maybe I just got hooked on Dynaco sound...?

The Grills on my dynaco's are black. I found an easier way: Spray Paint!!!

I've done this on several badly stained grills...don't laugh, it works really good.

EDIT: Sorry about the "slight" threadcrap Robert.

?? I think that the grilles on the A25's are really spiffy! That speaker has a classic look, like 50's modern architecture.

That's funny and you just reminded me of somebody I know putting dye in their bathtub and turning their grills black. So long ago....:)

Did you put the logos back on?

You're right if you like a bland colour. I don't. Back then I had some furniture that had some red and an Asian wall hanging that was red and green. Red looked good in my decor. It had black threads in it. It was like 85% red in the weave.

Honestly, I had folks ask me if mine were a special edition and could they get 'em like mine, several times. I had the 35's for about 15 years though. I'm sure somebody disliked my butchery but they never said so, as much as I can recall....

Good luck finding those: I have had searches on eBay for those e-mailed to me daily, and I was lucky to get one search result per year. And often, the original drivers were replaced. (WTF were these people thinking??) The originals were the SP6, SP8 and SP10 (which I own two pair of). I was hoping to find a pair of SP8 to use on my rears in my surround system, but no luck so far.

The company went under, and they were resuscitated shortly after, with a different product line. But the new company didn't even make it past a year or two, and they've been gone for well over two decades now.

Good luck finding those...

It's funny, I googled "Grafyx" and it seems that most of the info on them (not much) comes from YOU!

I never bring them up because I didn't think anyone knew about them. I have a pair of SP 10's that I used to run with the Dynaco's. The match was very good. I still use the SP 10's daily in a vintage Sansui set up.

For the record, I like these better than the vintage Advent's, KLH's, and Dynacos. I think we own a "secret".

Just wonder who has taken over the rights to the name Dynaco these days. The last I heard it was owned by some Malaysian company. This is no longer the real thing like it was 40 years ago.

Panor (formerly Pan-Orient) Corp. of Hauppage, NY has owned the Dynaco name since 1990.

There is also another, non-Panor-related Dynaco company in Singapore (http://www.dynaco.com.sg).

Panor's Dynaco released a few tube products in the early 90's, to include an updated version of the ST-70 amp and PAS preamp... then they stopped.

Around 2000, Panor began selling items such as DVD players and MP3 players bearing the Dynaco brand name.

Today, Dynaco is nothing more than a storefront for many brands of A/V gear (http://www.dynaco.com) (Bose, Sony, Denon, Marantz, Toshiba) and lighting products (under Panor's other brand, Maxxima (http://www.maxximastyle.com)).

The only product they sell now carrying the Dynaco brand name is a pair of noise-cancelling headphones.

Like the Malaysian company that owned Nakamichi up till a few years ago, it has been all quiet on the audio front. In the meantime, names like Fisher and HH Scott have disappeared from the audio market altogether.

Fisher A/V (http://www.fisherav.com/)

They're still there with audio products, just not the same as they used to be.

They are just purveyors of cheap Chinese-made audio electronics.

Avery Fisher should be glad that he is still remembered for the famed concert hall (aka Avery Fisher Hall) in NYC Lincoln Center and not for these subpar audio electronics ...
